The full moon

It's the full moon in the UK tonight. I'm a terrible old insomniac generally but the full moon and the couple of days leading up to it are always particularly bad.

I don't track it or follow it - but when I've had some very awful restless and sleep-deprived nights I look it up, and it's always around the time of the full moon.

Why is that?

Anyone else? Or any other things that go awry with the full moon for you?

I'm a teacher. Behaviour worse in pupils around a full moon!!

spangleswereace · 16/02/2022 20:44

It doesn't affect me personally but working night shifts in the hospital when it was a full moon was always eventful!!

Hairyfriend · 16/02/2022 20:46

Is it the light in your bedroom waking you? Wear an eye mask?

There are anecdotal links between a full moon and mental health, busier A&E departments etc- luna/lunatic but I don't know of any research evidence of this and whether its the tidal pull from the moon causing people to feel unsettled?

ViceLikeBlip · 16/02/2022 20:46

I never sleep at all the night before my period (not period pains or anything, just boring BORING insomnia) and that happens once a month as well.... 🤷‍♀️

Now you say it, the behaviour today and yesterday were off the chart ridiculous!
AuntMasha · 16/02/2022 20:48

Yes, I too find it hard to sleep during full moon. I also think I go a bit doolally, definitely hyper and restless.

SpiderVersed · 16/02/2022 20:54

The statistical analyses never find a correlation.

When I was a kid our next door neighbour was the supervisor of PhD Psychiatry students trying to prove wards etc were busier around the full moon. They all failed to find any evidence. He used to lecture on confirmation bias and placebo effect.

But last night's full moon was very beautiful .

BuddhaForMary · 16/02/2022 20:58

It's stunning tonight, it's the snow full moon. I'm always unable to sleep for a couple of days around full moon and always a bit more emotional or likely to say something people won't like.

It's the full moon everywhere tonight, not just in the UK :) It's rather lovely in Ireland.

It’s horrible. I feel ever so mixed up in the days before.

AuntMasha · 16/02/2022 21:16

That’s a beautiful photo!

Oh is it? I'm so ignorant, I didn't realise the phases of the moon isn't different according to where you are in the world like the sun is! Blush.

I used to manage an MP’s inbox, and they definitely got more crazy emails the day after the full moon.

TheVolturi · 16/02/2022 21:20

It's too cloudy here but I BLOODY KNEW IT. Two out of my three dc are always bonkers when it's full moon. Every time. And I used to work in a secure hospital and incidents were always higher on a full moon.

dementedma · 16/02/2022 21:22

DH works with children in care. He dreads night shifts on full moons. Kids really kick off.

BuddhaForMary · 16/02/2022 21:47

I cried at a random thing on the telly tonight. Even if I didn't already know it was a full moon I'd know it was just from that.

RoseAndRose · 16/02/2022 21:51

Once upon a time, when it were all fields round here, MN had a tab showing phases of the moon, just to make it easier to track lunacy (word chosen for its etymology!)

Ohyesiam · 16/02/2022 22:09

When I was a student nurse somebody did an analysis of analgesia given on an admissions ward with a view to looking at efficacy. One of the stand out findings was that 30- 40% more analgesia was requested on the night of full moon than any other night of the month, consistently over a 12 month periodShock.

The moon has a massive gravitational pull on water, causing all the tides , and we are mostly made of water, so it’s not surprising it effects us in various ways.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/02/2022 22:14

I work in care and you can tell when it's a full moon.

elephantoverthehill · 16/02/2022 22:19

Full moon and windy. Great to be a teacher.

Ah, memories. I taught DS1 about moon phases with it.

Wasn't it permanently stuck on waning gibbous before it disappeared?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 16/02/2022 22:22

@RoseAndRose

I was just about to say the same thing.

FelicityBeedle · 16/02/2022 22:34

It was quite a night last night in the hospital, I could almost believe the full moon stuff

GirlInACountrySong · 16/02/2022 22:36

I worked night shifts during last full moon and 2 nights in run up to this full moon

From 3 am the birds are in full on singing mode!
It's so odd!

gamerchick · 16/02/2022 22:36

The way I see it and people may not agree.. is the moon is the can control the sea and humans are mostly made up of water. So why wouldn't it affect us?

That's it though.
