Scout camp rucksack ?

Shinyandnew2022 · 16/02/2022 20:33

Last camp DDs existing smiggle wheelie bagwas far too small for the large amount of kit needed so am looking for a recommendation of something suitable for either of my two DC to take on camps / PGL etc .
Anyone got anything they can recommend to save me trawling online ?
Thanks

DC got his from Mountain Warehouse during the sale, big enough for a weeks scout camp. They also do a scouting discount as do Blacks

Just jumping on to ask what size capacity people buy for camp for 2-4days will 30l do or do they need 40l?

Shinyandnew2022 · 17/02/2022 23:59

Perfect @Gindrinker43 I was wondering if mountain warehouse was worth a look actually as I do have one nearby.
Also interested in what size it needs to be they seem to need several changes of shoes for all the activities!

Realistically I'd say you're never going to fit everything into one rucksack. I send my son off with a teen rucksack I got from Decathlon (basically a three quarters adult one) + a big blue IKEA bag for sleeping bag, mat etc.

Best of luck and I hope they get good weather!

Ds had one that was recommended for DofE expeditions.

Im a guide leader but we recommend this one for our girls - not too expensive and equally not too big or heavy. As pp have said, can supplement with ikea big bag for roll mat etc.

We use these too. They are brilliant for camp.

Thanks @GuidingSpirit

40-65ltr is what we normally recommend, 65ltr is the standard size for DofE.
Look at features such as straps that let you attach extras to the outside of the bag, like water bottles on the sides and sleeping mat under the bag.

Sleeptillnoon · 18/02/2022 21:30

That Decathlon one is the one we have, I was really impressed with it.

And yes good old IKEA bags, they do come in handy, don't they!

Is similar to ours which has done numerous scout camps and 2 DofE. Use packing cubes inside. The roll mat and sleeping bag need to be attached on the outside. Lining it with a bin bag keeps the contents dry and saves you scraping stuff out of it after.

Thanks I have ended up ordering this one as mountain warehouse wasn't much help.
It's good to get one that others have recommended and I will have an oral bag at the ready too !

DD has a large duffle bag, not a back pack. But, she doesn't have to carry it for long periods, the kit is brought by vans. She also has a 20l day pack.

For a back pack her leaders recommend around 60l for a week and the sleeping back attached to it. Saying that, it also depends on the season, if they have to carry equipment or just clothing and what kind of activities they are doing. DD's summer bag is a lot smaller than the one she takes for a winter camp when they camp in tents.

MaizeAmaze · 21/02/2022 21:46

DS has just come back from a weekend away (cadets, not scouts). Everything, including sleeping bag and pillow, fitted in my old 65l DoE rucksac, but it swamped my petit 12 yr old, and needed a lot of adjustment to be OK to carry a short distance.

Shinyandnew2022 · 25/02/2022 20:07

In case anyone else is still looking the Decathlon backpack was a winner and we managed to get everything including sleeping bag and a bath towel she won't use into it apart from her wellies !
She found it heavy but won't be actually hiking with it this time I think it will get plenty of use.
Thanks all - we didn't even need an IKEA bag this time .
