Girlguiding camp blanket, can I just buy any?

DD is just about to finish Rainbows and go to Brownies.

She has earned a number of badges. Her Pot of Gold, 7, Anniversary and District badge will move onto her Brownies uniform (she may also beg for the thinking day and Mirabel ones too) but the rest we plan to put on a camp blanket with her swimming badges.

She really doesn’t like the Red Rainbows one. She really wants the blue Guides one, can I just buy the Guides on or does it have to be the Rainbows one?

It’s the only thing she’s asked for for her birthday so I really want to get it if she’s allowed it but also don’t want to get it wrong. I never did guiding so have no idea.

It can be any blanket. Doesn't have to be an official GG one.

Apple40 · 16/02/2022 19:17

I used any blanket, never brought the guiding ones .

RainbowMovingToBrownies · 16/02/2022 19:18

Any suggestions for good ones if not the GG one? I want it to last up until she chooses to leave which might be aged 18 or never with how much she loves it

My guide camp blanket was the one my mum had when she was a reservist in the WRNS in the 1960s 😂

BigSandyBalls2015 · 16/02/2022 19:20

If it’s for her birthday I’d buy the proper guide one

IKEA sell some lightweight fleece ones for about £4.

If you cut a hole in the middle she can also wear it as a poncho.

Makinglists · 16/02/2022 19:22

In my days there wasnt a special/section blanket we used army surplus. The blankets were meant to keep you warm like a cloak round the campfire/while camping. I would buy a good quality plain blanket. If someone stays in Guiding a camp blanket can be for life. Many people would cut ( and blanket stich round) a hole so you could wear them as a poncho. Mine is almost 40 years old and in the blanket box. Its a lifetime memory.

@BigSandyBalls2015 She's not actually bothered if it's the official one, she just wants it to be blue which is her favourite colour.

If the Guide one is anything like the Scout one, I'd buy a smaller interim one... the Scout one is massive and heavy! (And thick making harder to sew onto.)

(I think I have about 50 Cub badges to move...)

DockOTheBay · 16/02/2022 19:27

Yes any blanket is fine. I got my daughter a raspberry pink one which I think is for leaders but it doesn't matter. The navy blue one is nice.

The Guide one is not too heavy or thick. They're just fleece, and fairly easy to sew on to.

The guide one isn't like the scout one, it's quite small and personally, I don't love it. My mum made me my blanket (when I was 34!!) And she made it so it functions like a poncho, which is far more practical for camp anyway. It's just made out of blue fleece material.

You can use any blanket you like, think carefully about badge placement though, if she's in for the long haul, there will be a LOT of badges to put on there.

JimmyDurham · 16/02/2022 19:29

Can be any blanket. DD's was a tartan blanket we bought on holiday in Scotland.

MrsFionaCharming · 16/02/2022 19:31

The Guide one is quite small, it’s ok as a lap blanket now round the campfire, but a bigger one is needed to sleep under.

I’d go for a bigger one and add a head hole so it can be worn as a poncho.

modgepodge · 16/02/2022 19:39

Any blanket 🙂 agree she may have it for life - I got mine at around 13-14 and still have it in my mid 30s despite not being involved in guides for over 10 years. May even pass it on to my daughter one day!

funtimesahead100 · 16/02/2022 19:44

If your DD is planning to use it near a camp fire etc i wouldn't recommend a fleece blanket as its flammable, at scouts we recommend getting woollen ones.

@Farcry66 I don't do the sewing that's ExHs job Wink

I pay subs, for uniform, anything else but ExH does the sewing.

@funtimesahead100 Her dad (ExH) won't sew onto wool as he's not that brilliant at sewing, he's just about mastered getting it onto her hoodie and sash.

Mine was some manky old blanket which had done for several dogs before it came my way. I liked it very much, though.
RainbowMovingToBrownies · 16/02/2022 19:51

I might pop into the camping shop nearby and see if I can find anything.
