He won’t be allowed to fly, will he?

My brother is taking his dc’s to Lanzarote on Friday. His eldest is 18 and has his Covid pass but his 14yo doesn’t as they’re not currently available even though 14yo has been double jabbed as he’s clinically vulnerable.

Dbro is very pig headed and once he gets an idea that he’s right about something he will absolutely not listen to any other POV. He thinks that as 14yo is double jabbed he won’t need to take a PCR as he has the appointment card showing his vaccine dates and the airport staff can look them up if they’re bothered about it. The card very clearly states that it isn’t proof of vaccination. I asked wouldn’t it be best to book a PCR to be on the safe side and he said that he’s not paying £100 for a test when he shouldn’t have to, the airport staff won’t care about him getting on the plane as it’s Spain that are the ones that have the rules, not UK and once he’s there they’re hardly going to deport him. Once they do get there if they really kick off he’s said he’ll get a PCR (I don’t know why he thinks this will be an option) and he’s taking a box of lateral flow tests so he can prove to anyone that asked that 14yo is negative.

I’m friends with brother’s ex wife and she’s tearing her hair out because he simply won’t listen. She’s sent him the link with all the rules where it clearly states how they are being relaxed for half term but a PCR is still required. He thinks she’s just trying to ruin his holiday and stop 14yo having a nice, relaxing time with his dad. I’ve tried to speak to him too and he just thinks I’m being ridiculous. His poor ds has been through so much over the last couple of years and the thought of him travelling 4 hours to the airport only to have to turn round and come home again, almost certainly after his dad kicks up a fuss and causes a huge scene is heartbreaking 💔.

Is there any chance brother could be right? Has anyone’s 14yo managed to go to Spain without a PCR and vague “proof” of being double vaccinated?

You can download the app now if you’re under 16 - my daughter has it

ihearttc · 16/02/2022 18:49

@Duvetdweller
Interested to know how you managed this. DS1 is 17 and had both jabs and has the app but he can’t get the Covid pass on there…it just says not available for Under 18’s

PossiblyDreaming · 16/02/2022 18:55

The app for under 18’s doesn’t have the Covid pass on though or any information showing recent vaccinations.

No advice on the rules etc but we flew to lanzarote 2 weeks ago from Ireland with recovery certs, they were anal with checking everything when we got to Spanish customs honestly I nearly had a nervous breakdown with the way they were going through Passports with a fine tooth comb so I'd def be of the opinion not to think they won't care once he's there I got the impression there is zero tolerance given.

70kid · 16/02/2022 19:07

If I was the ex wife I would take DS and get a PCR test done before he flies and let him take it with him to the airport
I think it’s within 72 hours of landing so enough time
And you can get them done in plenty of places with a few hours turn around

Greentime101 · 16/02/2022 19:08

My son is 15, has the app & it shows both his vaccines

mumofthree22 · 16/02/2022 19:08

@PossiblyDreaming it does - it was introduced at start of Feb. I just did it yesterday for my 14 year old. Registered and had the pass within 3 hours

BetterBee · 16/02/2022 19:09

The nhs app has covid pass for under 18’s now. The 14 year old will need to download it, verify by uploading passport and saying some numbers. Once valid the covid pass will be on there.

They won’t accept a vaccination card.

TyrannosaurusRegina · 16/02/2022 19:10

I recently got back from Spain and they were very strict.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 16/02/2022 19:10

12 to 15 year olds don't use the app, they need to use the online NHS covid pass service linked to at the bottom of this page
www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/get-digital-covid-pass/

ihearttc · 16/02/2022 19:10

We tried yesterday and it just says not available for under 18’s.

mumofthree22 · 16/02/2022 19:11

@PossiblyDreaming I used this yesterday

That link tells you to download the app for 13 +

QueenofLouisiana · 16/02/2022 19:16

DS has the app- the nhs one not the covid one. He has got his pass from it and I’ve printed it off ahead of our holiday at the weekend. He’s 16, doubled vaccinated.

FlyingFlamingo · 16/02/2022 19:20

We’re in Wales so no app but my dd13 has a covid pass through the website linked to above, as pps have said you just need a passport to verify his identity.

tickingthebox73 · 16/02/2022 19:28

13+ CAN use the app now, but it takes 48 hours to register and involves you taking a photo of passport.

Duvetdweller · 16/02/2022 19:33

You can definitely use it if you’re 14 because my DD has it: I think it’s quite new though. She got it within 12 hours and all info (inc double jab was on it). We’re in England - don’t know if that makes any difference?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 16/02/2022 19:33

Oops, so it does. Apologies all, misread the age.

abricotine · 16/02/2022 19:36

In England, my kids 13 and 15 both double jabbed and have the app. The letter is now only for 12 year olds I think.

PossiblyDreaming · 16/02/2022 19:40

Phew, thank you so much! That’s such a relief, hopefully he’s actually downloaded the correct thing or can at least be pointed to it when he gets to the airport and tries to use the appointment card as proof.

His exw wanted to book a PCR for 14yo for tomorrow but he’s currently at his dad’s house and his dad wouldn’t take him to the appointment m.

I like the idea of doing a pcr and giving the certificate to your 14 year old in case its needed. Yes its an expense you shouldn't have to do - but I would do it for the kids benefit.
I guess the 14 year old knows what dad is like - and assuming a good relationship with mum they can talk about the likelihood of what might happen at the airport...
Also get your kids on the case with the apps for their phones - i bet they can figure it out quicker than their parents so you may find the pcr is not needed...

Sundancerintherain · 16/02/2022 19:46

I live in Spain and have returned their from England in the last 48 hours and saw 2 people refused boarding because they didnt follow the rules.
The airline wont take them without the proper documentation because they would then be liable for getting them home and would also face a fine.
ALL paperwork is then checked just after passport control.
Simply put your brother is being a massive idiot.

OldWivesTale · 16/02/2022 19:48

My dd is 16 and has the app and it shows her vaccine and recovery pass.

Kanaloa · 16/02/2022 20:07

I agree with this. I really wouldn’t want to since I’d feel like it was selfish of his dad to leave it down to the mum but I think the thought of the child being turned away I would just do it. But then I would feel very resentful that the dad is being so irresponsible and stupid about it. I don’t know, I’d be in two minds! But I think this is a good idea.
Kanaloa · 16/02/2022 20:10

Oh I see his dad is refusing to let him go to have the test. God, he sounds like a piece of work.

Perhaps this is just one of those cases where someone needs to learn the hard way that they’re not always right. I think it’s very unfair the 14yo boy has to be the pawn/innocent bystander in it though.

Good to hear there’s a possibility of the app being useful, hopefully he can get that instead!
