Menorca in early April

Hello

We are planning on heading to Menorca in early April. I know the weather will be around 18-20 ish, it's the only week we can go so wondered whether the sea / pools will be freezing for the kids at that time?

Any advice welcome - we know where we will be staying as have been several times before but always in July / august.

Thanks

Yes I would expect so. Kids can be pretty hardy though, maybe get them a big inflatable so they can float without getting too cold.

Notdoingthis · 16/02/2022 18:48

Will it really be that warm?

Icantgetalifeifmyheartsnotinit · 16/02/2022 18:49

It's 17 there at the moment so I think so, if not more like 21-22.

We went to menorca last week of may to first week of June and the pools were too cold.
I’ll also add that Menorca is very boring. Not much to see or do outside of the resort.
Majorca is much better for families. Although the pools will definitely be cold when you plan to go

Average temps in pics, air and sea.

Though it is warm today. I assumed it wasn't all that warm there.

Having been a holiday rep (back in the day 🤣🤣), the amount of complaints we used to get about cold pools/sea etc in the early season. And this was usually late April not early April.

Clymene · 16/02/2022 19:11

It will be really cold. Go to the canaries instead

underneaththeash · 16/02/2022 19:14

Definitely Canaries. It may be okay, but you don't want to waste money on a cold holiday (when there is nothing else to do there!)

PeakyBlender · 16/02/2022 19:17

Yes the pools will be unusable if not heated and the sea will be very chilly too.

April can be be really rainy too, it's not the best time to go as it's too early in the season. Most shops and restaurants will be closed or only just starting to open.

I would go elsewhere although I do love Menorca when it's sunny.

Violetmo0n · 16/02/2022 19:19

I went to Menorca beginning of May couple year back.
It was alot warmer than I thought. Warm enough to sunbath.
Pool was cold but still plenty of people in.

QueenofLouisiana · 16/02/2022 19:21

We went in early April 2019, Majorca. It was 17-20 degrees but with a couple of rainy days. Outdoor pool was too cold (kids braved it for a few minutes), we were glad that we’d book a villa with an indoor pool too.

Thanks all. There's more than enough to do with toddlers, we're only going for 4 or 5 days and plan to be at the beach every day. Will look at going in June instead if we can.

June is gorgeous there.
Icantgetalifeifmyheartsnotinit · 16/02/2022 19:38

I've been in June before and it's been super hot, not sure that's what we're looking for but if the pools are unusable and the sea freezing it's not going to be much fun for the kids. Might look at mid to late may also.

I would contemplate the balearics before May, I'd definitely go to the canaries instead...we had 20° degrees in January in Gran Canaria and looking at 22° in Lanzarote next week, pools are heated so usable. I once went to Turkey end of April and although the sun was warm the pool was absolutely brassic, and not enjoyable in the slightest!

lanbro · 16/02/2022 19:40

*wouldn't contemplate

Icantgetalifeifmyheartsnotinit · 16/02/2022 19:42

I've been to the canaries a few times and the beaches don't compare to Menorca in my opinion, especially not for really young kids. The sea in Menorca where we visit is always flat and calm and super shallow, and the beach is huge and usually fairly quiet. I've always just had a better time in Menorca than in the canaries and Majorca / Ibiza (on non partying holidays!)

No, agree that the med is much better than the Atlantic with little kids.

You could look at Cyprus?

Icantgetalifeifmyheartsnotinit · 16/02/2022 20:10

We're quite set on Menorca as have fond memories and also have always said this specific area would be great for kids. We can go the week before may half term, which I think would be much better & just a week before June, so hopefully that solves that - water won't be hot by any stretch of the imagination but should be tolerable for excited toddlers!!

PeakyBlender · 16/02/2022 20:44

May is better, it's amazing how much difference a few weeks can make. Sea will still be chilly but okay for paddling. The pools will be freezing but they might go in for a minute or two

I don't like Majorca much either or the canaries especially with toddlers.

Icantgetalifeifmyheartsnotinit · 16/02/2022 20:58

I agree, I'm not looking for activities and nightclubs, just a beach kids can run around on and make sandcastles, what else do 3 year olds need!!!

OP posts:
Squeekyturtle · 16/02/2022 20:59

We are going at that time - planning to take wetsuits for the sea and have picked a hotel with lots of activities - football, tennis, crazy golf etc.. plan to just chill and relax (indoors if needed) with books and films and enjoy a quiet break hopefully.

vanessalightfoot · 16/02/2022 21:05

Which area do you stay in OP, out of interest? We went a few yrs ago near cuitadella and would love to go back

Icantgetalifeifmyheartsnotinit · 16/02/2022 21:41

Cala Galdana - it has a big bay type beach, not much to do there and haven't been for about 4 years but for a few days by the sea it's lovely! We usually hire a car and drive around but this is just a short break to dust off the cobwebs before a bigger trip later in the year (hopefully!)
