... that porpoises are very similar to dolphins.

For some reason I thought they were like porcupines. How was I so wrong for so long?!

I had something similar at Christmas. Forget what now

Grin that sounds familiar (49)

In my 50s and I've only just twigged that pink shrimps are meant to taste of strawberries.

They taste nothing like strawberries, so I think I can be forgiven. what on earth does this mean??

EdithStourton · 17/02/2022 21:54

@LittleSnakes, what it says.
They are supposed to be strawberry flavoured. It says so on a packet of them that I was given.
But they don't taste like strawberries.
So I think I can't really be blamed for not knowing any earlier that they are supposed to taste of strawberries.

nanohana · 17/02/2022 21:58

@EdithStourton Maybe @LittleSnakes didn't realise they were sweets. If you didn't know that I think your comment might seem a bit random. Mmmmm - love pink shrimps...!

Margotshypotheticaldog · 17/02/2022 22:02

Sc-oh-nnnn

Ohmnomnom · 17/02/2022 22:05

Red, green, yellow amd orange peppers don't come from different seeds. It's the same pepper, just harvested at a different time. Blew my mind that did!

EdithStourton · 17/02/2022 22:09

@nanohana, ah, yes, that didn't occur to me...!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/02/2022 22:22

I say the oi sound and didn't know it wasn't right. From the East Midlands

meow1989 · 17/02/2022 23:29

Just joining in the derailment from the South East Grin

Wun
Tor-tus
Por-pus
Sc-own

Also for arguments sake:
Vah-se
Gr-arse

I did think crudités was pronounced cru-debts until very recently mind.

WhistlersandJugglers · 17/02/2022 23:40

If you are in my part of Ireland
One=wan
Won=wun
Scone rhymes with own.
If you said "I won one scone" none of the words would rhyme and it wouldn't be a tongue twister.
Definitely an oi sound in tortoise.

Glad it’s not just me. Smile
LittleSnakes · 18/02/2022 07:28

@EdithStourton no I didn’t know they’re sweets!! Thought you were talking about prawns.

Yes! I'm South East too and this is how I pronounce these words.

I'm ok with crudités, but you really don't want to know how I used to pronounce Hermione, from Harry Potter Grin.

Thoosa · 18/02/2022 08:05

Her-me-won? Had a very confusing conversation about 15 years ago with someone who kept saying Her-me-won. Smile

DickMabutt73962 · 18/02/2022 08:09

@DropYourSword

It was just over 2 years ago I discovered I had been pronouncing Tortoise and Porpoise completely incorrectly for 3 decades Blush
Hmm do they rhyme for you? I pronounce them the same

'Taught-us' and porpoise to rhyme

saltedBubbly · 18/02/2022 08:27

I see this thread has now gone off into a pronunciation tangent but I have to ask.... did you think there were little spikey critters swimming around in the sea?
DropYourSword · 18/02/2022 10:55

@DickMabutt73962

I thought they were pronounced tort-oys and porp-oys!

LOL.

You need to go and find some. Along with spogs and various questionable chews, they were stuff of pocket-money induced dreams.

B1rdflyinghigh · 18/02/2022 14:52

It's not so long ago (and I'm 49) that it suddenly dawned on me that "Private Ambulances" were not for moving patients to the hospital. Rolls eyes...
