I have a huge boil on my head - can’t get a Drs appointment for love not money. DH thinks I should go to A&E - i think this in neither an accident, nor an emergency. Do I stick a (sterilised) pin in it and see what happens??

When I saw the thread title I though “obviously “
However, having seen the pictures I think it does need medical attention unfortunately

Go to gp and ask for referral to a skin clinic. It is not a big job to remove and they won't do it purely for cosmetic reasons but pain and interfering with usual tasks (like hair brushing)should be enough.

Yes update… finally managed to get through to the GP and they had prescribed antibiotics but hadn’t been in touch to let me know 🙄 have resisted the urge to stick something pointy in it and am sticking with the antibiotics 😬

You're a very strong woman to resist! I'm glad you are though - don't want to mess around with infections.

I had one of those cysts right on my hairline on my forehead. Despite it being in a prominent position and the fact that it felt like I was being poked by a stick all the time, the GP refused to make a referral.

I started to look into paying for it privately and by the time I would have paid for an initial consultation, plus the operation (using local anaesthetic) it was looking like it would cost the best part of £1000.00.

Thankfully, I remembered that my husband had private healthcare for his spouse provided as a benefit through his work, so I got it paid for in the end. The operation took about 20 minutes and I had to keep the dressing on for 3 days but it healed very well.

Sorry I haven't rtf, have you tried magnesium sulphate, to see if you can get a head on the lump/try draw out any pus that might be in there?

SoItWas · 18/02/2022 22:06

Also, I'd try putting a hot flannel on it a few times a day/gently running warm water over it for a few minutes when you get a chance.

Looks like a pilar cyst. It will have a thick sac wall and cheesy contents. Probably need surgical removal and antibiotics will not help and neither will trying to stick anything in it.

I'm also a picker/poker. If I can get a head on a lump, it'll get popped.
