Gallbladder removal

Wondering if anyone has any experience with gallstones. I've been having pain on and off for a few years now. I've ended up in hospital as the pain got so bad last night. Mostly I have daily pain that isn't intense but enough for me to pop pain killers. It's very up and down. I always have a bruised type feeling in my rib/back and then it intensifies sometimes. I also have pain that I can only describe as trapped wind.

My questions are.... Has anyone had to have their gallbladder removed even though they didn't have any stones lodged in a duct and no inflammation? My stones are "uncomplicated gallstones", so neither blocked nor inflamed etc. Just stones.

Also, how is life now since having your gallbladder removed? Any problems with digesting fat afterwards?

Thanks x

I found the pain in my shoulders from the gas they used was the worst thing I experienced. I had two weeks bed rest followed by two weeks working from home and felt fine on that schedule.

Was it keyhole surgery @Spotthedog91? If so the gas they use to inflate you so they can see is known to cause “gas pain” after operations where it congregates - and this is most commonly in the shoulders. I’ve had it and it’s awful! I hope you feel better soon!

If youve got a stone, get it out. I found out i had stones when i was pregnant. They wete awful then subsided. A few years later they wete back with a vengence and i ended up in hospital on morphine and having daily bouts. Even dry toast or a lettuce leaf would give me excruciating pain. I had it out and its the nest thing ever

@Spotthedog91

Hi everyone. I had my gallbladder removed yesterday. Pain from surgery wise I feel well.. Not much pain. Just got pains in my kneck and shoulder from the gas they pump into your stomach during surgery.

However.. I've still got pain where my gallbladder was and also the usual burning in my shoulder blades. I'm terrified the pain I haven't hasn't been solved by surgery... Did anyone else have these same worries after? I'm hoping its just wear that area of my body is sore from the surgery xx

I was the same!!! But once i healed i felt much better

Thank you everyone. I'm feeling bruised and I so have pain in my shoulders. I have two little ones so resting is difficult, but I've got a good support network around me luckily :-) I still get the slight burning in my shoulder blade like before... Hoping it's due to the gas and it settles down soon x

Tey some peppermint tea or peppermint capsule for the shoulder pain, Windeze can help too, you can get it from most pharmacies but check the label first just to make sure it doesn't interfere with your pain meds.

I had mine removed but it caused a lot of trouble for 6 months. I can't deal with fat or dairy digestion since, sadly.

The gas feeling does wear off within a couple of days. You will recover quickly I'm sure.

Had the op 3 years ago after 2 horrible scary episodes, once DH called ambulance. The male ambulance nurse diagnosed me correctly on the spot. Smooth day surgery and a week of rest, no side effects except I can no longer drink mint tea without getting trapped wind weirdly. The consultant said once your gallbladder has started acting up best get rid. Worst case scenario dhiarrea for life, but there's drugs for that. We had a very interesting chat about it, apparently fair women who are not stick thin and have had a child in the past 0-8 years are more prone. So much so I spoke to a scandi friend who said yes, on the ward after we were all fair and they nurses offered breast pumps! Shock

I had a lot of shoulder pain afterwards and the nurse said it was normal after the surgery. Been 20 years since my op and it was the best thing ever and stopped the pains. I have to eat small meals regularly, and I know that if I eat a lot of high fat it will come straight through. I often forget and regret it. Probably a coincidence but I became lacto intolerant within a few years of the surgery and developed ibs
