Arghh! Chipped my front tooth! Is it going to cost me a fortune to repair?

Sad

Just that. So annoyed! I’ll try and get an appointment tomorrow but wondered if anyone had a recent similar experience and could share how much it cost them? It’s just along the bottom edge of my front tooth. I am wondering if they might even just be able to even it up.

Composite bonding? I’m having it done at the end of my braces and I think it’s about £150 per tooth ish?

Thank you… that would be do able.

I feel weirdly really upset. My teeth have always been quite good but I’ve got sjorgens and lupus and in the last 6 months they’re just crumbling away! So frustrating.

I also had the bonding after whacking myself in the face with my laptop. Said it might not last but it’s about ten years and still holding strong.

TheCanyon · 14/02/2022 19:26

I've got composite bonding on that same tooth, think it was £90 but that was 5 years ago.

The missing but in yours is tiny though, they may be able to just file that tiny wee ridge so it blends in.

trilbydoll · 14/02/2022 19:32

My dentist attempted to repair a slightly bigger chip on my tooth, it wasn't much £££ at all but it didn't last. It was a bit like the false nails they paint on and then they set Grin but I chipped it off again within 6 weeks or so. She did tell me not to open packets with it and I don't think I did but I might have bitten a nail Blush

Bagelsandbrie · 14/02/2022 19:35

Thank you all, you’re making me feel better. I feel a bit Blush at being so upset about it. I am so broke at the moment too and this is the first month in ages I’ve managed to have any money left over at all and now it looks like I’m going to have to use that (and some of my overdraft!) to sort it out. Or just stay wonky…!

My son did exact same thing. Had a bit bonded on. As he is 16 it was free but dentist said it would have been around £200 cost wise.

NaturalBlue · 14/02/2022 19:43

I bit my tongue bar when I was about 18 and did similar damage- dentist filed it down at a check up for no extra cost. Most annoying thing was I couldn't bite sellotape after that...

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 14/02/2022 19:46

Dh bashed himself in the mouth a couple of years ago whist trying to do something in the garage, he had temporary fillings put on both his upper front teeth just before covid which now need replacing. He trotted off this morning for a check up and quote and turns out he needs a couple of fillings in his back teeth too, so 4 altogether. We're with a private dentist so I'd imagined it would be In the late hundreds but nope it's just shy of 300£, a pleasant surprise to say the least!

MsSquishy · 14/02/2022 19:49

I did the exact same thing and was upset too- my lovey dentist used a little bit of white filling then polished it to shape. It was done within a normal check up length appointment and no extra charge, just the normal NHS check up price. Hopefully your dentist will do the same!

PurBal · 14/02/2022 19:50

I did the same at 14. I just left it because it was a funny story: I was going in for a snog 😂

GuidingSpirit · 14/02/2022 19:52

I did the same as you in my early twenties. Dentist just filed it down - don't remember it costing anything extra.

Oh I love you guys. Star

I am feeling more hopeful now and enjoying reading your messages.

I’m having a really hard time of things at the moment health wise and home wise (child with sen currently at home signed off with anxiety in between complex needs schools) and it felt like the cherry on the cake…!

This is what I’m really, really hoping for! Thank you.

Sorry to say but build ups on chips that small generally don't have good staying power. The dentist could smooth the tips of both central incisors to match instead? Other option is veneers.

babycornfortea · 14/02/2022 20:09

Honestly, you probably feel that it's super obvious, but you can hardly even notice it!

I chipped one of my front ones a few years back, and didn't realise, until my dad pointed it out and we noticed that we had identical chips missing from our same front teeth! He's since died so I've left mine as it is.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. That’s a sweet story.

I do wonder if I could learn to live with it. I’m not sure. I really hate it right now! Also wonder if I don’t get it repaired will it be likely to crack / break further…?

I’ll post back when I’ve seen the dentist and update.

I paid about £20-30 on the nhs for one of those white composite fillings.

Be sure it’s a front tooth I don’t bite anything hard with it though!

Katkinsgreyy · 14/02/2022 20:42

I flew over my bike handlebars as a child. Ended up with a large chip in my front tooth!
I have a pin and composite material on my tooth. It has lasted me 20 years!!
I know the day will come when it needs replacing

Bagelsandbrie · 14/02/2022 21:23

It’s interesting how some peoples repairs have lasted ages and others have come off very quickly!

cupolaoftea · 14/02/2022 21:45

You can't really notice your chip, OP. Looks fine.

I have a small triangular chip on my lateral incisor. It looks quite cute so never had anything done to it!

prampushingdownthehighst · 14/02/2022 22:05

I chipped mine last August and haven't had any problems, yet!
Going to the dentist in a few weeks so we'll see what they say, but mine is a very small chip like yours and I'm just not willing to spend hundreds on a cosmetic procedure but will if it compromises my tooth health

CourtRand · 14/02/2022 23:25

I've had bonding on all of my front top teeth. Cost £1500 for 8 but you can do per tooth. It's very effective and looks great so don't worry. Although it's not infallible and I have chipped my composite before.

Try not to let them file if you can. My dentist did and it left my teeth much shorter (which another dentist said is ageing and caused my further chips).
