What are you doing to reduce your electricity use?

I have Oil CH, no gas so the electricity is quite low, but oil costs are quite high. I dont think I can limit my electricity use too much other than not using the tumble dryer (I already try to avoid it) and dishwasher (was recently given to me, so am used to not having it and don't find it as much help as I thought!)

Anything else? I'm switching lights off more and not leaving the radio on all day but can't see that they use too much anyway

@Svara

Our shower isn't electric though
We have just got a shower timer. I just need to persuade DS to use it.

Luckily, I can afford the increase as we don't use much. So it's going up but not enough to make me worry too much. We will be watching what we use but we don't use much.

I feel for people who will struggle to make cuts and who can't afford the increases.

I do too, we've been there. I'm afraid of being in that situation again so would rather go too far in getting the bills down than not far enough, but we should be okay unless they go up dramatically in October. Though I don't like the fact that I only have any real control over half my power bill, the gas usage, the rest is electricity and standing charges.

In our house- we're eating breakfast more communally, a big pot of porridge vs one having the microwave, one of us using the cooker, another of us using the toaster sort of thing.
We're running down the spare freezer, that'll save a few £ each week.
We're cooking off multiples of things at once where possible.
Air fryer if we can to avoid the oven being used as it uses less electricity.
Cutting down on tumble dryer usage
Trying to spend more time communally so we aren't running 2 tvs etc.
The family are actually turning the lights off when leaving rooms at the moment.
Getting rid of the hot tub will cut our use in the summer.
Cut down hours that were using the tv, and asked everyone if they could stop using multiple devices at once.
DH is awful for charging his phone, using it whilst he's sat at his laptop that's always on charge with the TV on.

Instead of cooking fresh every day I am now making two meals and cooking at once in oven eg shepherd pie, fish pie and heating second in microwave on second day. I'm going to do more batch cooking and freeze portions to microwave. Not saving electric but saving money I am parking on free parking 1/4 mile from swimming pool instead of paying £2.50 to park for an hour. DS swims 3 times a week so saving £7.50 each week, that is unless pouring with rain.

I have decided to buy some long velvet curtains to go in front of door between lounge and hall, to keep the heat in. I have blinds but might go for long matching velvet curtains for Windows too. My Mum always had long velvet curtains when I was growing up and she said they kept heat in so we could use less heating.

The shower in our en suite runs off hot water system whilst shower in main bathroom and shower room are power showers so use electricity to heat. I am telling teen tomuse our ensuite for shower not main bathroom.

1748kw in a 2-bed flat for the last year, just 2 of us. No electric shower, dishwasher or tumble dryer. I've been wasteful with the electric oven though (2 jacket pots anyone!) so will cut back there.

Wash EVERY wash at 30. Add a splodge of disinfectant (cheap no frills stuff, not expensive laundry version) to every wash. We do lots of sporty stuff in our house and this ensures it does not smell after washing.

The extra cost of washing at 40 is astounding!

@ImFree2doasiwant if you only have a bath would something like this be an option for extra savings? The modern attachments are better than those rubber hoses attachments of my childhood/student days!

shower attachment

Or a tap adapter adapter

ImFree2doasiwant · 21/02/2022 23:19

@Yeahbutnotreally sadly due to the bathroom layout, and the bath being under a sloping roof, I could have any sort of overbath shower. I dont think having a bath is costing more than a shower though tbh. I think I'd use a shower far more frequent than my every other day baths!
