Any options to delay/stop period for one month?

Decades ago I would just back to back the pill, but I stopped taking it 11 years ago to ttc dc1.

I've a romantic trip away booked with dh and just checked the calendar and saw it falls right at the same time as my period.

I don't want this to be a "sex on period" debate - I flood terribly for a couple of days and it will really worry me to stay in a nice white linen bed that isn't mine - plus I do not like having sex on my period.

Is there any sort of temporary medication I can purchase to block this months period or delay it by a week?

Nortihisterone; I’ve spelt that awfully! But it’d need to be prescribed by your GP, and generally you’ll get your PMS symptoms for the time you delay your period for, some people get worse symptoms than normal due to the hormones and some people don’t tolerate it at all. I find it doesn’t affect me at all; but I also don’t get PMS, so that might be linked!

You need to start taking it the day before your period is due at the latest, I think, but it’s been a while since I’ve needed it.

Will the GP prescribe given that I want it only to enjoy a trip away with husband? Grin seems a waste of an appointment!

Don't need to go to your GP, can get it prescribed by online pharmacies, Lloyds or Superdrug etc do it

Was going to say the same - norethisterone. They were happy to supply it at the GP - sadly my BP was high at the time so not only did I not get it but they put me on Ramipril which turned out to make me cough. Luckily this was 2019 but I spent the whole week with heavy period, coughing myself silly.
I have since been prescribed it and it worked fine.

Word of warning - not everyone gets on with norethisterone. I’ve tried it twice and have never been so bloated and uncomfortable in my life, I felt anything but up for sex. Both are pretty common side effects. I’d be looking into using a diaphragm for period sex rather than risk ruining the whole trip due to feeling crap.

Yes- Norethisterone- you don't need an appointment for it, just prescription.
Or you can order it online- I think it cost around £11.

was gonna suggest norethisterone as well but also to warn of side effects. I got the worst acne ever on this (which i dont get other than a few wee spots at that time of the month), took me 3 holidays to figure out it was the norethisterone. It wasnt just a few spots, it was like hard lumps under my skin all over my face, but no pus so squeezing them made no difference other than to make them look 100% more inflamed and worse. Took a few months for my skin to go back to normal. Will never touch norethisterone again. But it did stop my periods!

I suspect it will be one you need to buy online not OTC because it will need a prescription it's just they prescribe it behind the scenes online?

Not certain but wouldn't go into town on a special trip without checking.

RosieRoww · 14/02/2022 12:46

I never had any side effects from that, op.
