Is stiff neck always a concern?

I've had a cold about a week now.

Main symptoms have been feeling exhausted (I work from home and have been napping a lot), coughing and feeling generally grotty. But it's not a particularly bad cold, I've still been able to get on with stuff mostly.

I also had a runny nose earlier in the week and I also 0mhad a stiff neck which lasted a day.

DD has just got up saying her neck is stiff. She's fine otherwise. No fever, no headache, no sensitivity to light.

She can make her chin touch her chest although she doesn't like to as it's uncomfortable.

Should I worry about meningitis? Or is stiff neck only a symptom if you have other symptoms?

Can stiff neck be a sign of covid? (About to do a test).

She's probably just slept funny

planningtomakeaplan · 14/02/2022 09:32

She says she has a sore throat also.

But , even if she did, it's a bit of a coincidence I've been ill and had a stiff neck, and now she has one too, isn't it?!

When I had my stuff neck it wasn't at all like when you sleep funny, it was very obviously part of the cold. It was all over my neck, it felt as if the whole thing had swollen and got stiff (although it didn't look swollen). It wasn't painful in one place or just when you move it like you get when you sleep funny.

I would just phone the doctor if you are worried. Let them decide.

If she's fine in herself I honestly would not worry!

planningtomakeaplan · 14/02/2022 09:46

Can't get through to my doctor for love nor money. It's shit. (They've just merged 3 surgeries and you just can't get through. You can buy book an appointment through the app but last time I tried that it offered me one in 3 weeks time).

I don't know if I am worried? She seems fine otherwise.

Random "buy" appeared in that sentence! We're not at the point of buying appointments yet, thankfully!

My question really is, would you be worried if it was your DC?

I wouldn't be worried but if you are and you can't get through to your doctors do the 111 online questionnaire. It's the same triage system as you'd get on the phone.

onanotherday · 14/02/2022 09:51

OP have you taken a LFT, just to re Covid out?...I would give Calpol and see if that has any affect. If not 111 just to be safe. 💐

TheVolturi · 14/02/2022 10:01

How old is she

planningtomakeaplan · 14/02/2022 10:48

She's 9. Just done a test and waiting for the result. Looks fine so far.

Do you have a cash plan like simply health. They have private consults which i have used.

planningtomakeaplan · 14/02/2022 10:55

Do you mean do I have health insurance? No, I don't.

OP posts:
Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 14/02/2022 10:57

no it's not insurance it's a health plan where you get money back for opticians etc.

SoftPillow · 14/02/2022 11:10

I wouldn't worry if she's otherwise fairy well and has no other worrying symptoms.

I get a stiff neck when I've got a cold, as a child I used to sent home from school with it regularly until my mum set them straight 😀

TheGonnagle · 14/02/2022 11:13

Neck pain was my first Covid symptom. It was sore for a couple of days before I got a positive LFT.
