Thrush, UTI or worms in DC?

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 13/02/2022 20:14

How do I tell the difference in pre-teen DD?

And what do I treat with. She’s had a dose of Ovex but she seems so uncomfortable I’m not convinced it was the right option.

What are her symptoms? I'm not medically trained but thrush tends to be felt at the front and worms, in the main, around the anus. ( Although I believe sometimes in the genitals/vulva). Does it only hurt when she pees? Does it itch? The symptoms for these are different.

She told me she had worms and said she was unbearably itchy so that’s what I treated. But she’s been in and out of the loo all afternoon so I’m thinking more likely to be a UTI. She’s too old for me to look now.

Worms are from back passage and uti is a urine problem.. how does she know she has worms? TMI how did she describe it... if it's something that's a cause of concern you shouldn't fell like she is to old to see what's happening. I would check her stools yourself

Get her a GP appointment.

It takes a while for the ovex to work, a few days at least really in my experience and then you have to repeat the dose about 2 weeks later to break the cycle. Also wash all underwear and pjs and bedding at 60 degs to kill eggs.

It may be that she just feels irritated by the worms. But it could easily be a UTI or thrush. How old is she? Would she speak to a doctor?

Liz1tummypain · 13/02/2022 20:42

The thing with worms is you do have to be scrupulously clean. One treatment is not enough, you need to take 2. Then wash bedding, underwear and every towel she is using. Most importantly, cut her fingernails, make sure she doesn't put her nails in her mouth ( causes re-infection) and ensure she wears knickers in bed. There's no harm treating it as worms unless it's a UTI that is going undiagnosed so probs best to get her a docs appointment if you are unsure.

Worms can travel and migrant to the front too.

Worms are also seldom seen in the stools.

I’d worm, get done biona cranberry juice and also canesten cream. Cover all bases

Both my DCs of a similar age get vaginal pain when they have worms, so don't rule that out. When did you give the Ovex? It can take a couple of days to work. Was the itchiness at night or also during the day. Worms tends to really only be at night.

If there is redness or discharge it is more likely to be thrush. You could see if Canesten helps. Otherwise, try GP.

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 13/02/2022 23:45

Thanks all.
She's adamant it's at the back not the front. Says she's not having pain when weeing and not needing to wee frequently so I'll give the Ovex a bit of time to work as it seems most likely.

IME the worm itchiness kicks in after being in bed for a couple of hours, or sitting still on the sofa for an hour or so. Basically once you’ve been still and warm for a while. If it’s always around this sort of time then suggests worms to me.

Always take a second dose of Ovex two weeks after the first, and always dose the whole family.

Why are you asking here?
Book a GP appointment in the morning.

@MrsSkylerWhite

Why are you asking here? Book a GP appointment in the morning.
All potential causes are commonly treated with over the counter remedies therefore a doctor’s appointment should be unnecessary unless it fails to clear up without the suggested time frame.

Looks like Ovex has done the trick as she is fine today (and she was definitely not ok yesterday) so all good. Noted re bedsheet washing, cleanliness and repeat dose.
