Hi all, just wondering with the cost of everything going up in price what are your best money saving tips ...

I'm trying to batch cook more and use all my left over veg for soups etc

Buying food on sale on its sell by date and freezing it - something i never did but you can get great bargains on meat, pizzas, ready meals etc

Using cheaper (own brand) washing powder/fabric softener

Trying to cook fake aways instead of eating out at weekend

Ordering off the saver menu at McDonald's and bringing our own drinks 🥤

Anyone got more to add ? It's actually quite fun when you realise you've saved £30 by tweaking what you normally do lol

If you want a posh pizza, buy a value pizza snd cooked prawns. Tip prawns on pizza. Costs about £3 less than a finest prawn pizza.

With soup I don't just bung it in and hope for the best. I tend to see what sort of veg I've got left over and have a few go to recipes that I'll use. So broccoli cauliflower stalks etc will go in together with onion or leek, garlic, pesto and a small potato (and top with a bit of cheese). Carrots/parsnips and the like are better curried so I'd add an onion, garlic, ginger and curry powder. If you google a combination of veg you'll usually find a nice recipe to follow. Kale is great with a little bacon, onion, garlic and lentils etc.

Good one. I should totally do this with Aldi anchovies and olives.

Value pizza is revolting - the base is horrible. If you want it to be cheap make your own and use the hot pan method. If you want a nice pizza get the molica (sp?) bases and put your own toppings on.

Svara · 15/02/2022 07:26

Agree that the value pizza base isn't nice, I'd rather do 'pizza' on french stick. Or in Australia we had 'Lebanese bread' in the supermarket, dinner plate sized flatbread like you buy a falafel wrap in, though I think you'd need to go to a middle eastern supermarket to get it here. It can be kept in the freezer and is great for quick pizzas.

We buy frozen pizza dough balls for 75p from local farm shop, much better than cheap pizza bases or cheap frozen pizza. We just Chuck tomatoes purée and what ever cheese we have on top (plus any extras we have lying around).

I've started keeping a bag of posh pot noodles, crisps, cereal bars etc in the boot of the car, saving a fortune on those days when everythings gone wrong and i haven't had time to have breakfast/make lunch

I try and be extremely frugal in the first 2 weeks of the month.

Switch from tissues to cloth hankies. Also saves the 'oh no there is a tissue in the wash' moments.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/02/2022 12:45

DH uses real hankies. He has almost exhausted his supply including my grandfather's and father's hankies. I bought some from M&S for 7.50 for 5? They are hard, badly made and vile. A pack of three traditional lawn hankies is about £25. Not sure they are much of an economy.

The fact that your DH has been using your father's and grandfathers handkerchiefs illustrates my point perfectly. They will last for many, many years.
