Just after some info from anyone who's had these - where did you go? Did you have a blood test first? Thank you

No wonder we’re drowning in primary care….

Maybe if you can’t eat well and can’t remember to take supplements being vegan isn’t for you?

@ilikeyourdognotyou

But it’s an illness. I would love to not have to go to the GP every 10 weeks to get an injection but nothing I can eat will change that. You have chosen to be vegan and not take supplements yet.
I honestly wish you could have a day in my shoes especially when I’m due my injection. It’s not just being a little bit tired. It’s absolute bone crushing exhaustion that means it’s an effort to actually move. It’s brain fog so bad that you struggle to do the simplest of tasks. It’s joints that ache that it’s hard to put one foot in front of the other. It’s a heart that races all night long so you don’t sleep so are even more exhausted. I truly wish I could eat something that would make me feel better.

To those who are feeling dreadful, I need jags as my body can’t absorb the pills and recently I’ve started magnesium and zinc and this past month I’ve felt MUCH better. If it wasn’t for the tingling fingertips I’d not know my jag was due. Which is I’m unbelievable as symptoms usually start at 8 weeks.

This could be something you want to try too. I’d recommend it if you have the money.

Zinc from Asdas own range and magnesium from vitabotics (I think that’s the name) again from Asda.

Under a tenner for both. If you have that spare I’d totally recommend trying it.

It may be that I just needed it but if you have the same problem it could help you too.

Ive had issues with my iron level since I started my periods at 13. Heavy, looking pale so been on and off iron for years. Then after the kids i was sterilised but my periods got heavy and close together. Back on iron.

Then 3 years ago I started getting pins and needles, palpitations, breathlessness, and after bloods confirmation that is wasn’t pernicious anaemia it did show that i had macrocytic anaemia. If they diagnosed years ago I wouldn’t have suffered with my body.

So i had 6 jabs of B12 in 2 weeks then 8-weekly jabs, plus the minipill to stop my periods.

Now im bloody flying!!!!

@Elieza

My friends friend got b12 jags and he had terrible nosebleeds. So I’m not entirely sure a potential overdose is harmless.

You should tell the gp your symptoms for sure and get bloods done.

I know jags look like the easy option but if you be any unwell or something and nobody knew you’d had a jag as it’s not noted on your nhs record perhaps it could cause issues?

You cannot overdose on B12. There is no established level of toxicity for it. Your body will only ever absorb a tiny amount of B12 from supplements then your body excretes whatever it doesn’t use through your urine. That tiny amount is all those of us with pernicious anaemia need.

Your friend's nosebleed won't have had anything to do with the B12.

@Elieza that's a bugger. It's what I feared when I was told to start taking oral supplements. The idea that I could self manage was so bloody wonderful I was so scared that it would be taken away from me.

Happily for me my check up blood test showed that the oral supplements were doing the trick.

And you are right. The difference between "I am feeling a bit run down" and the absolutely physical and mental crush of anaemia symptoms is absolutely enormous.

Have you tried oral supplements on top of the injections? See if you can extend that 8 weeks? Might be worth a try with a 1000mcg / day tab.

Right this is my last post then I'm off.

  1. I'm not going to waste GP's time so no one needs to worry about me being a drain on the NHS.
  1. I'm not claiming to be seriously ill or in any way comparing myself to someone who is.
  1. Telling someone (anyone!) maybe they shouldn't be vegan if they don't eat enough vegetables or take supplements is a knobby thing to say - I KNOW THANK YOU!

Who knows what I'll do. I'll have a think. Maybe I'll print out a food pyramid and one of those portion plates and put them up in my kitchen. Maybe I'll forget to eat again and have toast and biscuits for tea!

Have a lovely day everyone.
