One day of slightly "bad" food

I had about 10lbs to lose.

It's been gradually dropping off through eating good food at mealtimes. No snacking and no refined sugar, but eating real food until I'm not hungry. I don't pay particular attention to what it is, but usually tend to naturally choose healthy options. All home cooked, lots of veg, not usually fried. I do have carbs with every meal and don't go hungry.

Anyway yesterday, I stuck to the programme. Did a run in the morning. Had my usual porridge at breakfast, lunch of delicious smoked mackrel and hard boiled egg tartare with bread and salad, followed by plain Greek yogurt and berries. For dinner I had a small takeaway (so not that small) vegetarian pizza and a few glasses of red. As I one off I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've put 2.5 pounds on overnight!!

I'm blaming the pizza. Or is it the wine? I have never cut out carbs, but recognise a whole pizza is a lot of carbs. An overnight thing due to the way carbs retain water in your muscles and all will be back to normal by morning?

Have you been to the toilet yet? Grin

It's bloody annoying OP, I get you. I also went for a long run yesterday, clocked up 22,000 steps. Had a Buretto and a glass of wine last night - 2lbs on this morning! Don't stress, it'll come off again in the week. You'd really think the exercise would counterbalance it though!

OneToThree · 13/02/2022 09:17

I’ve maintained my 2.5 stone weight loss for nearly a year but had a day off on Friday (meal out and alcohol). Same as you put on 2lbs. Very annoying. I do find it shifts quickly if I get back on it straight away though.

Have you had a poo yet?

ExactlyThat · 13/02/2022 09:19

It’s just water retention.

Jammylodger · 13/02/2022 09:21

Same here! Yesterday I ate below calories but did have bacon sandwich and 2 gins rather than usual low carb food.. 12000 steps lots of water .. so why have gained 2lb?! Frustrating as will take days to drop but don’t why? It must be water as food did not weigh 2lb!!

Jammylodger · 13/02/2022 09:22

How do you shift water??!

PurpleDaisies · 13/02/2022 09:22

Don’t weigh every day. It’s absolutely fine to have a less than healthy day of most of them are good. Don’t punish yourself like this.

It’s a marathon not a sprint.

MrsTophamHat · 13/02/2022 09:24

Don't be alarmed! It's most likely water retention from the alcohol and salt.

I would make an effort to drink lots of water today and keep on with your good habits. Start now. You're in a real danger zone now of thinking "oh fuck it" and just eating whatever. I've done it loads of times and always regret it.

In terms of sustainability, get into the mindset of "calories out/calories in" as a weekly cycle rather than daily. This then enables you to build in a buffer for social meals without unhelpful thoughts about having ruined your hard work because of one day off plan.

Abcdefyouandyourmum · 13/02/2022 09:24

It’ll be water retention.

Absolutely, weigh the same time every week, or better still weigh monthly, you will see a real difference then.
TheVolturi · 13/02/2022 09:26

I weigh the least at about 11am after I've had a few wees and a poo 😂 it can be a few pounds different on the scales, which is mad really.

This is interesting because personally I HAVE to weigh every day in order to stay calm about the result. I can accept daily fluctuations without getting too hung up on it, but if I hung all my hopes on a weekly weigh in and it wasn't what I wanted I'd be fed up, even though logically I know that it might just be a heavy reading.
Aubree17 · 13/02/2022 09:26

Body dehydrated with the alcohol and salty food and retains water.

Happens to me. Really annoying and makes it not worth going off track. I'm trying to stay 100% focused until I'm at goal weight.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 13/02/2022 09:27

Carbs hood on to water, just drink a lot of water or black tea/coffee today and it will shift back.

ExplodingCarrots · 13/02/2022 09:28

Your weight will fluctuate everyday . After a pizza and alcohol it's bound to go up. But it's not going to be 2.5lb of fat overnight . If you're weighing daily then you need to do a weekly average so to account for fluctuations. If you carry on as normal next couple of days then it'll disappear quickly .

usernotfound0000 · 13/02/2022 09:30

Definitely water retention! I 'put on' 5 pounds over a relaxed Christmas Day and Boxing Day but it had all gone again by new year. I think more salt and alcohol causes water retention.

OrangeShark27 · 13/02/2022 09:30

You haven't gained 2 5lbs of fat overnight. It'll be water weight because of a salty pizza and alcohol or a big poo.

Weight loss is never exactly linear, you need to look at the general trend rather than individual weights. Our weight is not consistent to the pound throughout the day anyway

Lovemusic33 · 13/02/2022 09:30

This is why you shouldn’t weigh yourself every day. Weekly is more than enough. Your weight will change each day depending on many things, not just food, if your period is due you may weigh more, if you haven’t been to the loo, if you have water retention and several other reasons.

A small take away will not make a huge difference.

OrangeShark27 · 13/02/2022 09:33

It's not really annoying though, water weight is just water and happens to everyone. Our bodies retain different amounts of water depending on the conditions. It will go and is not a reason not to eat the odd pizza or glass of wine.

You are presumably trying to lose fat not weight, so if you are losing fat it really doesn't matter what the actual numbers say. If they are a bit higher because your body is holding onto more water because you ate something salty its not a big deal.

A580Hojas · 13/02/2022 09:34

Don't obsess like this - it's terrible for your mental health.

sHREDDIES19 · 13/02/2022 09:42

I really think weighing scales should be confined to the kitchen! Imagine living a life where all hopes and dreams are pinned on an arbitrary number? It’s how you feel, your shape, the progress you are making in the mirror over a period of time. And it’s impossible to put on 2.5lbs of actual fat overnight.

CrinklyCraggy · 13/02/2022 09:43

I'm not obsessing about it, I'm interested in what causes the fluctuations.

I like weighing daily, it keeps me focused. I plot the results on my running app and as long as there's an overall downward trend on the graph, I'm happy. 2.5lbs in a world where good progress is 0.5 - 1lb per week seems a lot though!

No I haven't had a poo this morning Grin

IME as a daily weigher, alcohol messes up your digestion and how your body uses water. Takes about 3 days for me to return to normal, and I would have half a bottle at the most.

amymel2016 · 13/02/2022 09:44

It’s impossible to put 2.5lbs of fat on overnight, it will all be water. Drink plenty today, move and you’ll be fine.
