Ideas of good jobs that require no qualifications

Looking for a job for someone who had a tough upbringing and didn't do well at GCSE level.

He's worked 2 long stretches as a SEN TA and in a telecommunications customer service role, he's doing well there and gets great feedback but the company is largely unsupportive and he finds the work monotonous.

He communicates well and works well as a team etc, no issues with him that could restrict him in this sense.

He doesn't want to go back into 'proper' education, but would do a short course for example if it would help him get to a new role.

What jobs spring to mind? He does want something 25k+ but understands it may be lower to begin with

Currently looking into estate agency and recruitment roles.

Train driver

28 is a great age to join the police. If he has the gift of the gab then sales are always a good option, just be really careful when making the jump that it's a good company with a decent basic. Recruitment, for example, is a real hard graft.

Civil service then do the management apprenticeship?

If he's interested in the police force and has customer service skills how about police call handler. Its well paid, an interesting job and the calls will be varied. I've worked in many call centres so can relate to the monotonous side of things.

I’ve got a friend who is in sales for an online estate agent
She didn’t do well at school but is perhaps the most personable person on the plant. Takes home 4k after tax on a bad month. Good months… insane money.

Has he considered hospitality? I only say this because I have listened to a few podcasts recently about people who built their careers there and taken a lot of pride in it. With the right employer, ambition and hard work it sounded like a joyful career choice -- if quite a slog at the beginning.

Car sales?

sanbeiji · 14/02/2022 12:22

Apprenticeships/degree apprenticeship. Companies like Barclays take anybody, they even have 35 year old apprentices in their technology programme.

Something in the waste/recycling industry which is becoming big, Chartered Waste Manager for instance.

Also I agree with sales, easy to enter! Lots of money if you’re good at it and don’t mind travelling.

short courses are available on FutureLearn but sounds like he would be a good fit for an apprenticeship. Agree with @MrsHGWells plumbing, electrician can all lead to bigger things.

BT are offering Openreach apprenticeships in telecoms if that is of interest.

Sales
I manage a large sales team and have a 21 year old in my team who didn’t go to uni on £25k and earning £1k+ a month in commission. Recruitment is a great starting point and gives you a (tough) but very valuable basis to start from. It’s where I started my career and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities it provided to me.

I’d recommend B2B sales though over an estate agency.

There is a real skills gap in arboroculture?

balalake · 14/02/2022 13:06

Nothing I can add to the suggestions other than to wish your son all the best.

Call handler with the fire, police or ambulance. It will be shift work the pay is good, plus shift allowance, they are well supervised, not sure if that's the word, there is always someone there to help with decision making and action to be taken on the more difficult calls.

Sales can be tricky you either take to it or you don't and depending where you are employed pay can be commission only and/or if you don't hit your weekly/monthly targets you're out the door.
