Plantar fasciitis?

chiickenandchiips · 12/02/2022 12:38

Had anyone had this and found something that eases the discomfort and pain?

I'm finding my left foot is extremely painful if I've been walking or standing a lot, and after periods of sitting down for a while when I stand up I hobble about to avoid putting my foot flat.

Googling has led me to think it is plantar fasciitis? Pic shows where my pain is.

Plantar fasciitis?

Yes, have had this since early December Sad it is worse some days than others and it doesn't seem to make any difference if I exercise/go for a walk/rest it so I am just trying to carry on as normal with exercising etc.

Have found some trainers which really help (they have a pronounced arch so I assume that is what helps) so am wearing those around the house rather than barefoot or slippers.

Just hoping it will eventually fix itself Confused

It's really uncomfortable isn't it I've had it at least a few months and can't recall when it started or got worse Confused

I had this and the only things that helped were wearing supportive trainers all the time even with pyjamas and resting. Some people have found rolling a soft ball back and forth helps. It is so horrible though.

Arch supports and a supportive trainer.

tackling · 12/02/2022 12:55

Arch support, all the time. I had to get rid of all my flat shoes that couldn't fit supports inside them.

Stretching exercises like these at the time:

Haven't had problems for years now Smile

Arucanafeather · 12/02/2022 12:59

Personally I would get checked out by a physio. Lots of other issues cause similar pain so it could be that or it could be something else. I had pain at back of ankle that was actually a secondary issue to tightness in a tendon higher up where I had no pain.

ScouseQueen · 12/02/2022 12:59

For immediate relief a foot roller really worked for me. Noticed a difference in a few days. It was one of the cylinder ones that are textured and spiky - haven't tried the ball but that might work too. Mine wasn't this one but looked like this

www.amazon.co.uk/Core-Balance-Massage-Therapy-Exercise/dp/B01MS4QSBR/ref=asc_df_B01MS4QSBR/?hvlocphy=9046496&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=205160974284&hvpone&hvlocint&hvpos&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-487544710762&hvrand=7403166020926752552

I think longer term, more supportive shoes are the answer.

Tennis ball under the foot and roll foot over it. I also got my kids to massage/squeeze the heal of my foot. Stand on edge of stairs, with toes gripping and lower yourself down and then up. Kills to start, but once you got the stretch going, it eased it loads. I also got a walking stick as sometimes it was just too much to even walk.

RandomDent · 12/02/2022 13:01

I use a spiky dryer ball. A tennis ball has too much give for me.

I had plantar fascitis for around three years. It is controlled by lots of stretches, wearing an ankle support at night and wearing trainers or laceups all the time, including indoors. I didn't find an arch support that was the correct shape/fit.

This stretcher is very helpful.

These ankle supports are good.

JessieLongleg · 12/02/2022 13:01

I found those foot rollers really helped, went mad on it for 30 mins each foot getting every knot out. Then got better shoes.

Thethingswedoforlove · 12/02/2022 13:02

I wear shoes made my Fitflop. They do a whole range of shoes. Since wearing them my pf has been entirely manageable. They even do slippers so I can wear them around the house. My fil recently had the same issue. I recommended fit flops to him and it has made his basically go away too.

CharacterForming · 12/02/2022 13:04

Burn your converses.

Hadtocomment · 12/02/2022 13:07

Inserts and taping. A physio should be able to show you how to tape properly. There is probably info on the web that shows you. It's a life saver when on feet a lot or exercising and allows it to not be constantly pulled whilst heeling.

Sterpie · 12/02/2022 13:07

Rolling my arches on a golf ball and I got custom insoles that I wear are the two things that helped mine. I've struggled on and off for years though.

SlipperyLizard · 12/02/2022 13:11

I had what I thought was PF for about 2 years, didn’t get worse but also didn’t go away when I rested it. Eventually went to see a specialist podiatrist who said it wasn’t PF but was nerve damage/weak calves.

I need arch support in shoes (no converse!) and to stretch my calves properly but also heel raises to strengthen them - I do one legged heel raises while brushing my teeth. I can still tell the problem is there (slight weird feeling in my right foot), but I don’t have any pain. All of these things would also help if it was PF.

Go see a sports podiatrist, they’re the best people for this.

UnconditionalSurrender · 12/02/2022 13:14

Stretcher board for plantar. I got one of these www.amazon.co.uk/Adjustable-Stretching-Fasciitis-Achilles-Tendonitis/dp/B071L898F1/ref=asc_df_B071L898F1/?hvlocphy=1007366&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=309890096346&hvpone&hvlocint&hvpos&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-788614075860&hvrand=2343029288797255639

I got one of these after recommendations on here years ago. Plantar sorted in a few weeks after months and months of problems. I think my achilles were v tight as well so that didnt help. Then you need to find shoes that help. People swear by fit flops but it made mine worse.

30not13 · 12/02/2022 13:16

Crocs all day at work and a new bed. I didn't realise the impact of the latter until we changed it and I didn't wake up umpteen times in the early hours with sore hips and wake up hobbling on sore feet.

alwayswrighty · 12/02/2022 13:16

My sports physio said I've got PF last night after weeks of thinking I had a sprained or stress fracture (I run). Went out and got a ball to roll with today.

StrawberryPot · 12/02/2022 13:18

Don't walk around barefoot in the house or wear thin/flat soled footwear. Wear trainers or shoes that support your arches (I always found Skechers good for PF).

Use a chilled soft drink can or water bottle as a roller under your foot - instant relief. I used to keep one in the fridge exclusively for this purpose.

Google stretching exercises for PF.

Sympathies!

Insoles with a proper arch support for all my shoes. It works.

Lasagnaface · 12/02/2022 13:23

The advice above is really good. I would follow all of it!

Eminybob · 12/02/2022 13:27

Yes it sounds like it.

I had it in both feet for about 2 years, and it was a summer of wearing Birkenstock’s that finally cured it (not v helpful this time of year sorry)

BlondeWidow · 12/02/2022 13:28

Skechers Go Walk 5! No other version of Skechers or Skechers Go Walk are quite as good as the Go Walk 5!! I live in them now! I've had Plantar Fasciitis for 20 years and these have given me my life back!!!!

Also, putting your feet in a bowl of very hot water (or a hot bath) for 10 mins before & after work/going out/doing housework etc. Relieves the pain like magic
