Do you enjoy driving?

My friend recently passed her test and is a nervous driver. She asked me at what point I started to enjoy it and come to think about it… I don’t.

I don’t mind driving to Tesco or other shortish (under an hour) routes that I am familiar with but apart from that I don’t enjoy it and find it a panic. Obviously I do it because I have to and being able to drive was almost a necessity due to where I live but I much prefer my DH driving.

So, do you enjoy driving? Am I just odd?

Oh, I meant to add, I just passed my driving test in October so a fairly new driver like your friend.

IsItTooHotInHere · 11/02/2022 15:39

I don't enjoy driving, but it is very convenient to be able to get out and about

ufucoffee · 11/02/2022 15:42

Yes I love driving. Drove nearly 800 miles to opposite end of the country and back in a weekend a few weeks after I passed my test. Long distances don't worry me. Been driving now for nearly 40 years. Always fancied being a bus driver.

ellenpartridge · 11/02/2022 15:42

Sometimes enjoy it without the kids in the car and without bad traffic etc.... With kids screaming or squeezing down narrow double parked streets etc, big nope

PanickedE · 11/02/2022 15:43

Don’t mind motorway or country driving but I hate town driving!

Cofifeefee · 11/02/2022 15:45

I love it. Nothing like the independence of a car when you grow up in the middle of nowhere.

I do all the driving on family trips. DH much prefers being a passenger but his brother thinks he is under the thumb and emasculated by my driving.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/02/2022 15:50

I enjoy driving, which is just as well as my husband doesn't so I have been the main driver during the 30 years of our marriage.

I don't drive in central London but other than that I'm up for pretty much anything.

torquewench · 11/02/2022 15:51

I like driving.
I love riding my motorbike.

GTAlogic · 11/02/2022 15:54

Yes I do. I'm not a fearful or panicky driver and although I've slowed down a little as I've got a bit older I'm quick off the mark and am not hesitant: I keep up with traffic. As part of my job I travel to a new workplace almost every day so am not bothered about going somewhere I don't know (though I hate driving in Leeds; I always get lost on the inner ring road). I find it boring and frustrating at times like when I'm stuck in traffic or caught behind a slow driver but otherwise it's relaxing, especially when I have the music on full blast and I can sing along to it at the top of my voice!

ThatsALotOfPassionfruit · 11/02/2022 15:55

I love it. As in its a task I actually enjoy.

From the moment I started lessons I could sense the freedom it was going to bring.

BobbyeinArkansas · 11/02/2022 15:56

I dislike it.
I'll drive around my neighbourhood without a bother but I'm still scarred from driving on a motorway I wasn't used to an evening back in 2013.
Really don't enjoy driving in the dark at all but especially when there are no road lights (like large portions of motorways).
It's actually become a problem for me because we have a 2nd home abroad which requires a car and I won't drive without my husband which renders it unusable unless he comes with us.

Luckily my husband likes driving.

MarshaBradyo · 11/02/2022 15:58

I like city driving eg London as I just drive with music and it feels relaxing

allfurcoatnoknickers · 11/02/2022 16:02

Hate it. Used to view it as a necessary evil, but I've lived abroad in a big city and so haven't had to drive in 8 years Grin. DH can drive though and is currently hassling me to get my license in this country since my UK one has expired.

It blows my mind that people drive their kids every day. Just getting DS into his car seat usually ends up with both of us crying and hyperventilating. It's so stressful!

FelicityFlops · 11/02/2022 16:03

Yes, I love it.
I realised recently that what I most miss about working from home are the 30 minutes at the start and end of the day in the car, listening to the radio.
My car also misses not being driven daily.

Oblomov22 · 11/02/2022 16:04

Always loved it. Even now I like driving anywhere, generally, especially a few hours down to Devon say.

notacooldad · 11/02/2022 16:05

I love it as long as I'm by myself because I want to listen to my music and podcasts in piece and not to talk to anyone!

RampantIvy · 11/02/2022 16:05

I don't think being peri menopausal has helped tbh.

Why @Aderyn21? Not being goady, just genuinely curious.

mypinkwafer · 11/02/2022 16:06

Oh I don't. I'm not nervous at all and have driven the length and breath of the country but I don't enjoy it. I spend the whole journey going "oh ffs how much bloody longer?"

Crackercrazy · 11/02/2022 16:12

No, I don’t like it either. I only really do local journeys about town. The thought of driving somewhere new really panics me - I also don’t go on motorways.

Aderyn21 · 11/02/2022 16:22

RampantIvy my anxiety went through the roof. I had loads of menopause symptoms for a long time that I didn't realise were menopause symptoms - I never had the hot flushes, which is what I was expecting. Am better now I'm on HRT but I got out of the habit of driving.

EdithStourton · 11/02/2022 16:28

Yes, love it, though not keen on city driving. But luckily I don't have to do that very often.

PinotAgreegio · 11/02/2022 16:28

Love love LOVE driving! I've got a 4 hour drive to do next week and I'm positively looking forward to it. I listen to audiobooks, podcasts, sing (badly Blush) but I like the fact nothing else matters when I'm driving, I focus on the road and the journey and everything else can wait until I reach my destination.

Kite22 · 11/02/2022 16:33

I don't particularly enjoy driving but I don't mind driving either. It is just one of those functional things I do, like brushing my teeth or having a shower. I don't particularly think of it as a chore, but then I don't think 'Oh goody, I can drive there' either.

What I do enjoy is the freedom and autonomy it has given me for the last 40 years. My life would have been so much the poorer for not have been able to drive. Just so many things I couldn't have done.

turkeyboots · 11/02/2022 16:38

Driving is a necessity, not something I enjoy. I like navigating and looking at the view and what we pass.
My DM loves driving and happily does a 10-hour round trip drive for a weekend visit. I didn't get that gene.

Bosephine · 11/02/2022 16:44

Yes, I bloody love it.
