What's a nice way to cook gnocchi?

I bought two packs of gnocchi in Lidl this morning, and want to cook them for dinner tonight along with a vegetable stew/ghoulash.

Does anyone have an interesting and tasty method of cooking them so they're not too stodgy and tasteless?

I bake mine in the oven with a little oil... they come out like mini roast potatoes
And are lovely with stews and the like

Sauté mushrooms in butter and garlic and a splash of white wine, for 5 minutes or so. Add to cooked gnocchi and then sprinkle with feta cheese.

Baked or fried so they go all crispy on the outside

Fried in butter (don't boil first if fresh)

ClaudiaWankleman · 11/02/2022 11:48

I hate to say it, but supermarket gnocchi are all awful.
But...
You should boil until they float, then pan fry in butter with some rosemary and garlic and grate a little bit of lemon zest over the top when you serve.

I put mine in boiling water for 2 mins, drain then put them in a roasting tin with Mozzarella, tomatoes and pine nuts. Roast for half an hour. Lovely!

I was given good advice to just cook gnocchi in whatever sauce you're using, don't boil it first otherwise it goes a bit mushy. Seemed to work :)

Pan fried, not boiled - really stodgy otherwise. Love the idea of a PP of 'roasting' them.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 11/02/2022 12:00

Pan fried but make sure the pan isn't too hot. They colour quickly on the outside but take longer to warm through in the middle so you want to give them enough time to heat all the way through without becoming charcoal on the outside.

Chuck them in the stew when you are about to take it off the heat and they will have cooked in the time you take to serve it.

notacooldad · 11/02/2022 12:07

I like mine in a cream sauce with roast peppers.

Igotmylipstickon · 11/02/2022 12:12

Had homemade gnocchi last night with tender pork and tomato and garlic sauce. Yum!

MrsE · 11/02/2022 12:15

Roast them in the oven with mushrooms (ones in oil are the best), maybe some artichoke as well, bit of parma ham and then just before serving melt some blue cheese into them - so good

Susu49 · 11/02/2022 12:16

Taking notes because every time I cook gnocchi they taste and feel like balls of glue

Quartz2208 · 11/02/2022 12:18

Dont overcook them. I tend to put in boiling water for no more than 2 minutes then either roast or place in the sauce

EishetChayil · 11/02/2022 12:29

So the consensus seems to be don't boil first?

Some gorgeous suggestions - thank you.

Fried in butter without boiling first.

This is lush.

Also pan frying them so they go a bit crispy on the outside. I could eat them all day, love gnocchi, but DS and DH don't like them so I don't have them as often as I would like.

OohRahhMaki · 11/02/2022 15:44

Fry with butter and lardons! Pop a bit of sage in the pan if you have some - it goes lovely and crispy once fried.

KittenKong · 11/02/2022 15:48

Am Italian friend of my MIL fries them in olive oil and either pops a Napoli sauce on top or rolls them in fresh herbs (like rosemary) so they are like little roasties!

EishetChayil · 11/02/2022 16:37

I ended up roasting them with garlic, aubergine and olive oil. Not too bad!

Looks lovely.
I always put mine straight into the frying pan with a bit of olive oil, then when crisp I grate lemon rind on them, season with black pepper and a bit of salt, loads of basil and a bit of extra olive oil. Then add balsamic reduction or ketchup Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2022 17:31

I've finally discovered a way I can tolerate them.

Buy ready made from the fridge aisle. Put in a roasting dish with onions, peppers, mushrooms. Roast until golden. Add pesto and a bit of creme fraiche plus parmesan. Eat with salad to pretend to be healthy, or garlic bread if cba to pretend.

Homemade gnocchi are a fun thing to do with kids if anyone is wondering what to do with theirs at the weekend...

Looking at yours @EishetChayil I think that a pack of gnocchi in a pan with the roasted veg recipe from Delia's summer collection would make a lovely supper.
