Someone tell me about period pants!

I didn't know where else to put this. I was just looking at primark period pants and the instructions say to rinse them out after use and then pop them in the washing machine. It said it was important to not soak them or let them dry out. It also said to not use fabric conditioner. This essentially means you'd have to put them in the wash after each use, to prevent them drying out, and I couldn't put them in with the rest of my washing because I use fabric softener, so they'd be tumbling around in there alone, leading to about 7 extra washes a week with a lot of wasted water. How is this saving the environment? I get it's not using single use plastics by using sanitary towels, but it's swapping it for using excess clean water and energy for the machine itself. Is that better?

I use them and they are great, have change my life!
I rinse them out but put them in with my normal washing and they are fine.
I haven’t tried primark ones so cannot comment if they would be any good.

I don’t use Primark ones but I give them a quick rinse in evening and then leave until doing a wash and no problems. I don’t use fabric conditioner for anything anyway.

Don't use fabric softener. Then it'll be another plastic bottle you don't have to use and no plastic goop down the drain.

To spend money on period pants? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4474387-To-spend-money-on-period-pants

Good thread about them just the other day actually

Well, for a start it's not 7 extra washes a week, it's 7 extra washes per period. And you can offset the carbon used to create the electricity, but you can't offset the plastic that'll be knocking around many years after you're dead and gone.

So yeah, I'd say it's better. Put it on a short wash, low temperature, dry on the radiators.

Apologies, that of course should have been 7 extra washes a month.

I already use a cup, I was looking into these for my DD or to catch any leakages. I just wasn't sure how using extra water and electricity was good for the planet.

I rinse mine out and then just add them to the next wash I do. You don't want to use fabric softener because it'll reduce absorbance.

DappledThings · 11/02/2022 13:44

Just don't use fabric softener? I've never used it (not sure what the point of it is) but even if you do can't you just not for a few washes a month?

guiltynetter · 11/02/2022 13:47

I rinse, leave them until my next wash and just throw them in that with no fabric softener (i usually use it but if I'm on my period and need to wash the pants I don't)

They're a life changer! I never have to worry about leaking anymore especially at night. (not the primark ones)
