I have lots of tubs and pots. The colour theme for last year was shades of purple and blue. I'll probably do similar this year as it was gorgeous.

I quite like the idea of all white too, but in practise I can't resist colour. The colours I never do are yellow and orange as I'm just not fond of them.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 10/02/2022 23:56

Yeah I did think about yellow orange and red but not sure if I’d find them too jarring
I did see a really cool garden in a magazine once where they used an old fireplace frame
And inside put red orange and yellow flowers to represent flames and it did look cool
But I don’t know if I tired that, probably end up looking like steptoes yard !! 🤣🤣🤣

Mine was also blues and purples in pots, set against green planting.

No but the previous owner did. Everything is brightnpink. Some variety would have been nice!!!

A relative of mine has an amazing comour scheme where there is a different colour blooming every month of the year. If I was less lazy I’d do that.

LemonSwan · 11/02/2022 00:11

I always found red the hardest colour to get right. Its the shortest colour series in floral colours ie. their is no light reds, only mid and darks.

The key to getting reds right is looking at the undertones. So like with lipsticks - you have cool toned red (blue undertones) and warm toned red (orange undertones).

Once you crack that you can do some truly exceptional things with red. One of my fav combos is cool tone blue, acid green and cool tone red (red verging on purple).

Yellows and Oranges super easy to incorporate with most schemes. You cant go wrong with Blue/ Yellow/ Orange of any tone.

Yellow also goes really well with pinks for a hot summer border (think american prairie borders)

You can tell I love colour planning :)

Well i love ever trees so could I work one of them into a blue pink and purple scheme ?? Sometimes I think they look too bright red to go with that

'ever trees'?

Your going to have to help me with that one Grin

Whats the latin name

thecatneuterer · 11/02/2022 02:27

Yes, I have blues, pinks and purples at the back. And a hot border of bright reds, oranges and yellows in the front garden.

Poppins2016 · 11/02/2022 03:18

OP, do you mean the Acer 'Ever Red'? From its description and pictures I've looked at, it seems to be a fairly cool toned ('crimson/burgundy') red. This means it would probably blend with the other colours you have in mind, especially if you're careful with what you use as immediate companion plants.

I usually use pinks, blues and purples. In recent years I've also added some pale primrose yellows (including some gorgeous hollyhocks) along with a crimson Rose (Darcey Bussell) which looks great planted as a companion with Nepeta, lavender and ladies mantle (pretty much the same colour scheme as LemonSwan was talking about). I also have some crimson knautia plants which add a pop of rich colour while also blending with my pinks, purples and blues.

On the other hand... I would personally use an Acer (if indeed that's what you're talking about?!) or plants that might clash with my usual scheme in a different area... I often use a different theme such as warmer jewel tones (deep reds, oranges, purples) for the pots on my patio.

Acorndetector · 11/02/2022 07:58

No I would hate that. I have a beautiful busy cottage garden busting with colour everywhere. I have plants that add structure and a basic frame to the garden. But also lots of self seeding plants that pop up anywhere and everywhere. I have a nettle patch and don't mind the odd weed. I also have an area that looks overgrown and neglected. This bit is the most people are most likely to see. But I don't care if people passing think it looks a mess I find wild orchids and newts in their. The main thing I think about is making the garden natural and welcoming for the birds, bees and butterflies newts and insects that live their.

fussychica · 11/02/2022 08:26

Flowers are all white but lots of colour from the varied foliage, much of which is year round.

NalPolishRemover · 11/02/2022 08:33

We have a cottage garden & it's mainly purple, blue & some pink. With green foiliage of course.

We have the odd pale lemon lupin in one bed & it's ok but in general I'm not a fan of yellow or orange or red. Though I could tolerate red more than yellow.

When it's all in bloom with all the blue & purple shades it's beautiful! We have aquilegia, hydrangea (blue), lupins, religious, foxgloves, carnations, bluebells, snowdrops, tulips, pink & blue ground cover geraniums, agapanthus, allium, peonies, roses, hyacinths, lavander

pickingdaisies · 11/02/2022 13:57

My tulips are warm colours - so lots of ballerina (orangy) and negrita (purply- pink) with wine, apricot, and pink colours too. Then everything following seems to be mainly blues, ranging from purple through to white. But if things start looking too coordinated I throw a rogue colour into the mix - can't seem to help it.

MarshaBradyo · 11/02/2022 14:03

I stick to pink, orange, red, white, cream and greens

So a fair bit of colour but tend not to overdo yellow, blue or purple

LovelyYellowLabrador · 13/02/2022 00:35

Sorry that should have said I love acer trees

My rule , is nothing white, I make an exception for snowdrops and daisies though.

Poppins2016 · 13/02/2022 01:07

I have exactly the same rule, with exactly the same exceptions! I dislike that white flowers go dingy and brown when they fade and die... They also create a washed out effect when combined with colour that I dislike.

On the other hand... if I had a large garden I'd love a space similar to Monty Don's 'writing garden'. There's something rather gorgeous and ethereal about swathes of white flowers in dappled shade...

ApricotPeony · 13/02/2022 01:12

I was thinking I'd quite like white, pink, purple and blue only. There was a woman on gardeners world who had a white only garden. It looked lovely

SockFluffInTheBath · 11/12/2022 22:37

I've got a couple of cooler borders (white, pink, lilac, light blue) and a couple of hotter borders (red, orange, yellow) one of which is morphing into the strong, bright 'Venetian' colours which I adore. Also one large cottage-style border where anything goes (and all left over seedlings find a home!).
