Londoners help me please...Tube and where to stay

Hi all. I am going to watch Wimbledon this year, I've been to London once in my life so have very little knowledge.

Google is not currently helping me with regards to the tube. I'm not totally helpless and I'm sure once I am there I will navigate it fine but I need to plan a bit. My train will get into King's Cross, is it easy to get to Wimbledon grounds from there on the tube?

Also, which area do I look to stay in? I don't want to spend mega bucks but I want to be able to get to the grounds easily

In an ideal world I could get on a line at KC that passes through a station where I can walk to the grounds and maybe a couple of stops before that one there's one in a nice area for staying at

You are not going to find a tube line directly from one to the other. You will have to change to the District line

Putney is nice on the river. Wimbledon itself is quite nice as well - why not stay there?

Kfjsjdbd · 10/02/2022 20:25

So the closest tube station to Kings Cross is Southfields. It’s a much longer walk from Wimbledon. Southfields is on the district line. You get on the Piccadilly line at kings cross then change for the district at Earls Court. Super easy.

I’d be tempted to stay somewhere like the Premier Inn at Putney Bridge.

Kfjsjdbd · 10/02/2022 20:26

Sorry. The closest tube station to Wimbledon is Southfields! I make no sense above

Wnkingawalrus · 10/02/2022 20:28

Victoria Line to Victoria and change to the District Line. District Line to Southfields and walk from there.

What’s your budget for hotel? If you don’t mind cheap and cheerful there’s a premier inn in Wandsworth. It’s probably 30-40 minute walk from the club. Or there’s a travel lodge at Putney Bridge which would put you 10 minutes from Southfields on the tube.

AnathemaPulsifer · 10/02/2022 20:34

Get the Citymapper app to help you find your way around.

Echobelly · 10/02/2022 20:37

I'd stay around Wimbledon probably. If you want to be central, staying near Waterloo might be your best bet, as lots of quick overground trains to Wimbledon.

ShadowPuppets · 10/02/2022 20:42

Just bear in mind that prices go through the roof locally when the tournament is on - a friend Airbnb’s her house for a couple of weeks and heads to her parents, it pays for her summer holiday every year!

Flowersandbread · 10/02/2022 20:56

Thank you all so far. Will look at the Premier inns, cheaper the better for hotel, have been waiting for this trip since 2020 so will spend up to £150 per night

As pp said, download the city mapper app on your phone & it can navigate for you.

Stay anywhere in London really, it's all accessible on the tube.

It's very well sign posted from the train station, they are well used to tourists.

Only issue is getting home very late if a match drags on and the tubes do stop around midnight.

Have a fantastic time!
Comfortable shoes, sun cream and an umbrella!

The matches rarely go past 9.30 so don't worry about that.
NoToLandfill · 10/02/2022 21:09

Well one year a match finished after 10 and it was a bit concerning getting the tube then train home.
Just letting the op know. I imagine taxis are very expensive around the Wimbledon area.

Davros · 10/02/2022 21:10

When you get to Southfields or Wimbledon station, there are shuttle buses to the Championships that work really well. There's also an M&S by Wimbledon station if you want to but some grub to take in with you. I would stay somewhere on the District line

Mufflette · 10/02/2022 21:14

Lots of hotels near Earls Court station - straight from Kings Cross on the Piccadilly line and then direct to Wimbledon on the District.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 10/02/2022 21:14

I’d stay anywhere from West Brompton down to Wimbledon (but book anything in Wimbledon very soon - there’s serious demand). I once worked at the Championship and had an Air B&B in Wimbledon - is that an option?

You’ll have to change on the tube as PP said.

I just looked that up - 10.38! Surprised I don't remember, I must have been working.

Rare though. I'd stay within a bus ride myself but I hate the Tube.

I've just seen the District Line is virtually 24 hours now so OP, that will help.

Ohyesiam · 10/02/2022 21:21

Get the Transport got London app, makes things really simple

Isittooearlyforbed · 10/02/2022 21:23

The premier inn at Putney is literally next to the tube station. The hotel itself looks awful from the outside but is absolutely fine inside

artificialhells · 10/02/2022 21:29

As pp have said, you could stay anywhere on the district line route between Earl’s Court and Southfields for an easy journey.

Putney is a nice area - quite suburban, well to do.
Fulham is posh.

Earl’s Court and anything further east/ north have a more city centre vibe.

You could also think about Victoria or south Ken, which are also on the district line, they would both be an amazing base to explore London from if you have any time for that too

Flapjacker48 · 10/02/2022 21:33

@EmmaH2022 The district line is not "nearly 24hrs" at all. Will finish midnight or so and start about 5.

I am so sorry
I was looking on the moovit app which is normally quite good

The middle right section makes it look 24 hours except Monday after midnight

padsi1975 · 10/02/2022 21:38

South Ken would be very nice to stay in. I HATE changing at Earls Court. South Ken is an easy switch from Piccadilly to District line but check that Piccadilly trains stopping (they are not currently stopping but due to resume summer 2022, whatever that means). Gloucester Road might be an easy stop, maybe someone else can comment.

itwasntaparty · 10/02/2022 21:42

£150 a night, just for you or others with you too? You won't be staying in Wimbledon in Wimbledon fortnight for that.

Bootikin · 10/02/2022 22:09

Oh come on, London is not Outer Mongolia for god sake.

Premier inn cheap as chips, travel lodge if you want to suffer

Air bnb if you want to experience non draining showers or glory in your hosts every personal object incl crap cds in your living space

Not complicated really

Download the TUBE EXITS app on your phone and you’ll see how absurdly easy transport id, suggest you stay somewhere nice like Richmond and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

DoThePropeller · 10/02/2022 22:57

I’d stay here www.ruby-hotels.com/en/hotels-destinations/london/ruby-lucy - a few mins from Waterloo, get the overground train to Wimbledon. Pretty easy from King’s Cross too, either go one stop and change or walk to Euston and pick up the right side of the Northern Line.
