DS ripped off

halfthesun · 10/02/2022 19:10

Hello, would love some advice but also a word of warning. DS has just sold PS5 for £580, however the twenty pound notes were counterfeit! We are both so upset and feel so stupid. DS doesn’t want to report to the police. I think we should. The guy has a fake Facebook / this on reflection. So cross and upset on DS behalf plus this dodgy guy now knows where we live. If it helps we live in Hove, Sussex - please be. Ore carful than us. Any advice?

Just seen plenty of typos - sorry .... just bloody angry that this has happened.

Report to police, they might not do much but not a lot else you can do

Itsalmostanaccessory · 10/02/2022 19:18

You have to tell the police. There might be a pattern and they might catch the person.

You wont get any money. They dont exchange them nor do the banks so the money is gone. The police have been issuing a lot of warning to people selling online about not accepting cash unless you check it with one of those pen things. The pens cost a couple quid.

If you're selling anything else, use one.

caranations · 10/02/2022 19:21

Definitely go to the police. The more people who report this sort of thing the more likely it is that the perpetrators will get caught.

CockSpadget · 10/02/2022 19:21

Aw bless him. Why are some people such fucking lowlifes. I do agree you should report to the police.

halfthesun · 10/02/2022 19:21

Hello, I will be taking the notes to the police tomorrow. DS says a waste of time and now v v upset. Not sure if I should phone police tonight? DS is 19 .... should be doing this himself.

Damn it - so upset on his behalf. Bastard bloke said a present for nephew. He is early 20s, grey hoody, tracksuit and said he came from Bognor, pale, slim build and about 5 9. Writing this here as a reminder. He contacted DS via Facebook. Feel so stupid / I counted the money. Had no bloody idea fake money was so prevalent. Money is super tight at the moment do can't help DS out who bought it with credit card and starts paying interest soon. Plus the low life knows where we live. I'm a single parent.

That is shit, did your son buy it specifically to sell on and make a profit?

RedCandyApple · 10/02/2022 19:58

Just to let you know this happened to my mum when she sold something expensive, the money was all fake, police did not give a damn and didn’t do anything

VonWeasel · 10/02/2022 20:03

Sorry this happened to you. I remember reading about a similar scam near me (London) on Nextdoor. People shared footage from their Ring doorbells and I think more people came forwards as a result to report it all to the police. Don't know what the outcome was but you'd like to think the police linked the crimes and did something. If nothing else can you share what happened on Facebook (don't use Facebook so not sure about information being shared locally) but Nextdoor is quite good for this. Hopefully you can help to prevent others falling for the same scam.

FelicityBeedle · 10/02/2022 20:03

That is incredibly shit, but perhaps a lesson against scalping for your son

ScrumptiousBears · 10/02/2022 20:05

Even if you don't report yet, take screen shots of the conversation and save the full URL link to the FB account.

Personally I think you should report this won't be the first time they've done it.

Hugasauras · 10/02/2022 20:05

So he bought it with credit card and is selling it used at £100 more than retail cost? Was he trying to make a profit from it? Sadly a lot of dodgy stuff goes on with PS5s in particular because some people take exception to others buying up stock just to resell it for a higher price when stocks are still so low. Still worth reporting though but if he doesn't want to there's not much to be done, sadly.

ScrumptiousBears · 10/02/2022 20:06

I just thought. Does your DA have the serial number of the PS5? Police will need that as well.

halfthesun · 10/02/2022 20:15

Brand new, bought for 580 and sold for 580. Will ask about serial code. Sadly he is so cross with himself he isn't actually talking. He has had a tough time and was hoping to earn money to support himself through Uni. He also works full time but wage is low.

OooohAhhhh · 10/02/2022 20:24

It's worth reporting. Will anyone have any cctv of him walking up the street or anything at all?
That's the problem with selling high value items, always attracts scammers.
Your son or you wasn't to know.
For the record tho, if your son wants to make cash tell him to sell on eBay. I'm always buying cheap stuff in clearance & sell it for much more.
Some good money can be made from it.

FelicityBeedle · 10/02/2022 20:24

Bought for £580 and sold for the same but hoped to make money from it? I don’t follow

Costacoffeeplease · 10/02/2022 20:26

Sorry but how was he making any money if he bought and sold for the same amount?

halfthesun · 10/02/2022 20:27

DS has been trying to sell since November. End of month has to pay credit card with interest hence was just hoping to get money back. Think it is pay pal.

OP posts:
halfthesun · 10/02/2022 20:28

Tough lesson has been learnt by him and me. Thank you to those offering support and advice.

OP posts:
Kite22 · 10/02/2022 20:33

Am completely confused about the buying and selling for the same amount BUT agree he should report to the police - and sooner the better - they might recognise him and the sooner he reports the better chance they have of evidence if they are able to find him.

halfthesun · 10/02/2022 20:36

He has had it listed at 680 ... not sold so dropped price. Needs money to pay credit card thus in desperation accepted 580. Not sure why this is so tricky to understand???

OP posts:
KhaleesiOfChaos · 10/02/2022 20:37

To all those questioning OPs sons reasons for selling....

Sometimes you need money, so sell something valuable in order to make money. It doesn't always mean make a profit, just literally getting your hands on some much needed cash.

It's not rocket science and don't know why so many people seem to be focused on the motives of OPs son Confused

Franklin12 · 10/02/2022 20:40

Sorry I am lost here. Your son brought a PS for nearly £600 and then tried to sell it almost immediately for the same price (but only has a low wage).

Sorry. Why would he plan to this?

Thethreecs · 10/02/2022 20:41

I think your ds was ripped off twice. Ps5 here in Ireland aren't even that expensive. 499 euro for the highest price one. Was it a reputable shop he bought it with his credit card?

When selling high value goods from your home it is best not to deal with cash, or like someone said above, use the counterfeit pens if no PayPal, bank transfer etc

I've bought a lot of goods from people online and they don't ship /hand them over until they have the money. It's a chance buyers take too.

How did you spot the money was fake after taking it?
