Would you let your Year 10 dc do this?

Get the tube into Central London on a school night to have a meal and see a show? And get the tube back afterwards? Or would you expect a parent to travel back with them?

No, I wouldn’t.

Loopytiles · 10/02/2022 17:44

Let them go and return unsupervised.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2022 17:45

No

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2022 17:45

Year 12

bendmeoverbackwards · 10/02/2022 17:46

@HasaDigaEebowai which bit of it or all of it?

Should add it's a one off birthday treat not a regular thing.

On their own or with friends?

I think I wouldn’t be happy about that age travelling back alone at what would presumably be after 10pm. Going in would be fine assuming they know where they are going.

RedskyThisNight · 10/02/2022 17:48

I wouldn't but I don't live in London and my DC are not used to travelling on the tube.

If I had a Year 10 who was taking an accustomed journey i'd be ok if they were travelling with friends. Not on their own.

FelicityPike · 10/02/2022 17:48

How old is year 10?
How far a journey is it?
Who are they going with?

DogsAndGin · 10/02/2022 17:49

Depends where from.

Walking them to and from the tube station, and getting a 10 min tube going through nice areas, is different to a 50 min tube going through errrrm well, not-nice areas!

parietal · 10/02/2022 17:49

My DC are yr 9 and take the tube to school in London everyday. Assuming this is a group of 2-4 friends and they are sensible, i'd be fine with the journey down, text on arrival, dinner & event. but i'd have a parent meet them after the event & come home with them.

tintodeverano2 · 10/02/2022 17:50

Well I was going to London (well just a hop on the tube for me!) when I was 12, but obviously it depends on how mature the children is and whether they have been alone anywhere before.

Nailsbythesea · 10/02/2022 17:51

No

Hellocatshome · 10/02/2022 17:51

I dont live in London so I dont know but I would let me year 10 get the bus into the city watch a show have dinner but I would pick him and his friends up afterwards.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/02/2022 17:51

Yes I would

bendmeoverbackwards · 10/02/2022 17:52

It's for my dd's 15th birthday. She wants to see a show in town with 2 friends. I would drop them at the tube station, it's an easy journey without any changes. It's the coming home I'm worrying about. If necessary dh could stay late at work (he works in town) and could accompany them home.

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 10/02/2022 17:53

I would, I live in London with a teen dd

Bigbus · 10/02/2022 17:54

My DD who is in year 10 regularly gets the tube to school and out with friends so I’m comfortable with her doing that, just for context it’s not something unfamiliar to her. If it was the evening I would expect her to be travelling back with her friends, not on her own. I wouldn’t mind her travelling up there on her own in the early evening but I’d want her to come back with friends if it was later.

Hellocatshome · 10/02/2022 17:54

Could they not do a matinee performance and then eat out at the weekend and come home at an earlier time. My DS is sensible but you can't be sure what idiots they would come across and there tends to be less idiots around in the daytime.

miltonj · 10/02/2022 17:58

The going is fine, but yeah I'd get your husband to pick them up.

Camomila · 10/02/2022 18:00

If necessary dh could stay late at work (he works in town) and could accompany them home.

That sounds like a good idea, I think it would make the other parents happy to know they weren't going home by themselves.

Yuckypretty · 10/02/2022 18:02

Could they get a taxi home instead?

NeedAHoliday2021 · 10/02/2022 18:02

My year 9 Dd would not be doing this by year 10 - she’s a West Country rural girl and not Street smart! I was doing this age 14 but I’m from the south east and knew London very well.

AuntieMarys · 10/02/2022 18:03

Yes. My dcs were going into London from year 7

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/02/2022 18:05

What time does it finish?

If DH can meet them that sounds a better plan, you can get drunk lecherous idiots on the tube which could spoil their evening.

OldTinHat · 10/02/2022 18:05

Yes.
