Just got my electric bill it's gone up £200 compared to this time last year....it's going to get worse isn't it!
I have night storage heating which works on a thermostat and is set to low (17 degrees) plus a log cabin which I need to heat for my work (childcare so have to have heat!). I don't leave lights on unnecessarily, don't have my hot water heater switched on, only run my washing machine and dishwasher when they are full. The tv is on every evening but not in the daytime, don't have a tumble dryer.
I honestly can't see where I can save money on my electric bill (was over £400 this month)

So it's doubled since this time last year?

It's going up again in April.

WLAH · 09/02/2022 21:59

I got mine yesterday too and got a shock.

WLAH · 09/02/2022 22:00

@WLAH

A shock as in the price it... not an electric shock 🤣

I got my gas and it's £700 for a quarter 😱my hats surely not normal? New house so I don't know

earsup · 09/02/2022 22:01

put prices up.....everyone is where impacted by extra energy costs....my hairdresser has just increased prices.....sunbed also gone up by 20%....ultimately tho if everyone puts up prices then inflation will rocket....you cant reduce useage.

IDontHaveThePelvisForAFuton · 09/02/2022 22:49

Yes you'll need to raise your hourly rate to cover the increased cost of heating for your work.

Dds dance lessons have just gone up for that very reason. We're all feeling it 😞

mrsbyers · 09/02/2022 22:51

Is the bill based on actual readings or estimate ? I would submit an estimate

mrsbyers · 09/02/2022 22:51

Sorry submit a reading

Babadook76 · 09/02/2022 22:52

My gas and electric has gone up from £116 to £239 a month. Most of my money goes into taking care of exotic animals, some I’ve had for many years. I’ve already had to start compiling a list of who will have to go first if I can’t afford to take care of them anymore :(

Ridiculousradish · 09/02/2022 22:55

Is that right? I've got an electric key meter, and I probably spend approx £50 a month in the winter, and about £40 a month on gas. Me and a 12 year old. Heating is on for 3ish hours in the evening, washing machine on most days,

RightOnTheEdge · 09/02/2022 22:56

I have a pre payment meter and I seem to be topping it and the gas one up every other day now! I know that everyone says it costs more to have a pre payment meter but I do like knowing where I'm at with it. I don't think I could cope with waiting for a bill now and then getting a shock.

Teddansononmyown · 09/02/2022 22:56

Finally got brave enough to put the meter readings in.
Electricity has doubled and gas gas trebled.
Nothing has changed. If anything, we're using less as so conscious of it.

I remember when gas and electricity was combined £250 for the quarter and that would puy the fear of god into the student houseshare.

Now, a single month is over £150 for us and we are an extremely low-use household. The only thing is now the kettle is boiled a lot more often!

lkaist · 09/02/2022 23:02

Got ours today, on average we've paid £100 more a month for the past 3 months than we were doing this time last year.

Limmers14 · 09/02/2022 23:24

Our bill has doubled from this time last year. Used to be about £90 a month, now £186. Same usage, checked it against last years bills. Our supplier went bust in October and we were transferred to Shell where they put us on their highest variable tariff and we can’t change from it. Same usage but at the mercy of the energy company telling us we need to pay the highest price.

We’re a household that earns well but we sat down this evening and have decided to cut our dog walker and other costs so we can stay on top of our energy bill. This is going to hurt a lot people.

Theunamedcat · 09/02/2022 23:27

It shouldn't have gone up yet?

StarCat2020 · 09/02/2022 23:30

Energy company shareholders say thanks

StarCat2020 · 09/02/2022 23:30

Sick state of affairs

TheWestIsTheBest · 09/02/2022 23:32

I keep reading these threads, it sounds awful!. I am not in the UK and I pay $26.6 cents per Kw, which is 14.3p. What are you paying? I also have solar so can sell excess energy back to the grid, but I only get 7c per kw for that, and while I doubt if solar would be worthwhile for much of the UK, is it an option in the south? Petrol prices here are increasing to about $180 AUD where I live, which people are going nuts about, so I guess this is coming our way too, or is this a different issue?

StarCat2020 · 09/02/2022 23:35

Tory / neolib way

NeedAHoliday2021 · 09/02/2022 23:55

I’ve invested in a thick poncho but my dc still leave every bloody light on in the house. It’s concerning how those not in fixed rate tariffs will survive.

StarCat2020 · 10/02/2022 00:38

I have turned my combi boiler off altogether.

I cannot risk it using gas at all.

Snowpatrolling · 10/02/2022 00:45

I’m on a key meter and I am already seeing the rise, my gas and electric have both doubled.

PizzaCrust · 10/02/2022 00:58

Same. We have a new build so it’s a well insulated home, holds heat well and have a new boiler. Isn’t draughty at all, not a big house either. Before this year we’d top up £49 and that would genuinely last us around two months in the middle of winter.

We’ve literally just had to top up another £49 from two weeks ago.

We knew the prices were increasing but we didn’t expect that much. Our electric bill comes out every month but I’ll have to have a look at it as I’m sure it’ll be a lot bigger than usual.

Honestly, roll on April. On a good year we don’t need to touch the heating at all from April until the middle of September so it’ll be a good respite. I’ve also learned my lesson- I will definitely be heavily topping up next summer before prices inevitably increase again for the following winter. Hopefully that isn’t the case, but it’s so bloody miserable.

I’m just very fortunate that we can “afford” to heat our home.

Does it not take the credit as you use it though?

cuno · 10/02/2022 01:23

@Theunamedcat

Mine goes up loads this month because the tariff I was on just ended which was a lot cheaper than the variable rate that already increased in October! So it's bumped up quite a lot. And fixing it again is so much more than the variable so I have to tough it out and face another increase in April, then the October after that, unless I can find a good deal to fix into (unlikely). Lots of people are finding themselves in the same situation.
