Settle a heated debate for us please.

In reference to Proust, the writer.

Why heated?! The correct French pronunciation is Proost.

JohannSebastianBach · 09/02/2022 21:14

In French ou is oo so it's Proost and Proostian.

No idea. Everyone seems to feel quite strongly. I’m the one whose pronunciation was criticised but I’m quite chilled because I’m sure I’m right. Smug much? Grin

I’ll keep it fair by not saying which side I’m on yet.

It’s definitely Proost, because it’s French.

BurbageBrook · 09/02/2022 21:19

Here’s an expert talking about it on YouTube. Anyone saying ‘Prowst’ is wrong m.youtube.com/watch?v=_vHamdSO0Cs

loudbatperson · 09/02/2022 21:19

I have always pronounced it Proost, and I can't recall having heard it said differently.

LightSpeeds · 09/02/2022 21:20

Proost

tiredanddangerous · 09/02/2022 21:20

It's proost. Anyone saying it the other way is wrong!

Thoosa · 09/02/2022 21:27

Thank you.

DBIL is particularly exercised that I should anglicise it and I’m being pretentious by saying “oo”. I will continue to ignore him. Smile

The bet I made was for Friday’s takeaway, so I owe you a poppadom each.

You could really blow his brains and declare it's Proe-st Grin

He sounds like an obnoxious prick tbh. Does he have to "Anglicise" everything? What does he Anglicise "poppadom" to?
CaraMocha · 09/02/2022 21:46

Well I always said 'Prowst' as I had only ever seen it written and had no idea how it was said, so was embarrassed when I heard it and realised it was 'Proost'. I don't think I realised it was French as I hadn't really read any of his works, just had kind of come across the name.

See also the mathematician that I thought was 'You-ler', along the same lines as 'You-clid'. Seemed logical to me at the time...

Classica · 09/02/2022 21:54

Would he anglicise Camus and Flaubert too? Silly boy.

Enjoy your takeaway!

Thoosa · 09/02/2022 22:07

He’s just a bit opinionated.

I’ll try him with Flaubert at some point!

Best description of a husband I've read in a long time 🤣

Thoosa · 09/02/2022 23:28

Husband’s brother (thank goodness). He took it in good part, though.

I’ll have to name change now!
