Best birth control for endometriosis?

Hi, I haven't had much luck posting threads under women's health before so thought I'd try here. Basically I need my.periods to stop.

My endo is so far undiagnosed but my doctor thinks that I probably have it. I am currently waiting for another gynae appt after being fobbed off first time round.

I was told to take gedarel pill back to back to avoid periods. However while I was on holiday I forgot to take it until that evening (when I'd previously been taking it in the morning). What followed was about 23 days of bleeding, and I had to get checked for anemia as I became so tired.

Now the doctor has said I should try going back on the pill again but I'm scared of this happening again. She also mentioned the coil but said it is a 'procedure' and can be painful. Any advice?

Have you spoken to Endometriosis Uk or looked on the website? They have a lot of useful information from what I’ve seen.

I've been taking Cerazette without a break for over 10 years and haven't had any problems during that time, took a few months before bleeding totally stopped at the start.

I have the endo and after years of pain and heavy bleeding I had the coil fitted. Uncomfortable procedure but really helped with my symptoms.

Mirena coil is the go to suggestion by gynaecologists for endo patients. Worked well for me for 20 years, in tandem with four laparoscopic ablations for the endo adhesions

DaveGrohl · 09/02/2022 21:36

Ps it didn’t hurt having it inserted but I have had children.

@DaveGrohl

Ps it didn’t hurt having it inserted but I have had children.
Thanks. My friend recently got pregnant on the coil...she and her husband didn't want another child for a while so that did worry me a bit! I guess it's rare...and I'm fine with smears, don't know if it's in any way similar.

@rookiemere I'm just a bit worried about history repeating with almost month long bleed. It affected me emotionally as well as physically. I'm mainly ok on the pill but I can be scatter brained and am not always great at taking it at the same time every day.

I had a mirena coil with severe endo (undiagnosed at the time but that's another story). I had quite severe abdominal pain for 4 months after it was put in and I had to have it removed and I also bled continuously. I hadn't had children and I also had a history of continuous bleeding when I had an implant too. The pain from the endo did improve though. Most other women I know who have had the mirena have been really pleased with them.

StillCounting123 · 10/02/2022 09:43

My mirena has been fantastic! I was bleeding for up to 4 months at a time and since getting it fitted in Oct I've had a normal period each month.

I've had 3 vaginal deliveries, so barely felt it being fitted, but it's slightly more involved than a smear test, so I could see how a woman who hasn't had babies would find it daunting.

I wasn't good at remembering to take pill every day, so the coil has been great for contraception too.

No side effects like acne, weight gain etc. Would really recommend it.

Lucia23 · 10/02/2022 13:02

Oh @StillCounting123 I'm a little confused.

My doctor said the end goal was for me to stop having periods. So I will still get periods each month?

I mean if it improves my period great, but I thought it meant I wouldn't have them.

I had the implant but it didn’t stop them at all & the increased oiliness in my skin gave me cystic acne so I had it taken out.

I takeferrous fumarate each night now to deal with the need for iron and tranexamic acid to reduce bleeding.

StillCounting123 · 10/02/2022 22:38

@Lucia23 I'd like to know that answer too! My doc said my periods should stop, but I've heard it can take a few months, up to a year for that to happen while the body gets into the swing of having the hormones. I have my fingers crossed for my periods to go away, but still happy as it's so much better than it was!
