I've been waiting to buy a dog for a couple of years and decided to bite the bullet a few days ago. The reason I finally decided was because I fell in love with the gorgeous puppy pictures online.

I've been to see the dog today and she is more adorable than I thought and I agreed to buy her.

Trouble is about 20minutes after I came home my eyes started to itch. Not severely but they are quite red.

Now I am allergic to cats but not dogs, but this feels like it might be an allergic reaction.

I'm gutted to say the least. I'm going to have to retract my offer aren't I?

Well yes. One because you’re seemingly allergic and two because you don’t buy an animal because of cute online pictures (probably from a puppy farmer Angry)

MsMeNz · 09/02/2022 20:40

It could have been something else in that house, or something on the dog like a shampoo, to be sure try tomorrow and go to a friend's with dogs that are none hypoallergenic and see if same thing happens. If it does you will know.

WorriedGiraffe · 09/02/2022 20:41

Could they also have cats that they kicked out for your visit? You need to go visit the puppy again and find out for sure.

My son is allergic to animals but we have a dog.

When we first brought her home we had him on antihistamines and inhalers and it didn't take long for him to become immune to her. Now he gets a rash if he puts his face on her but otherwise is absolutely fine.

He still has reactions to other peoples cats and dogs though just not ours we have had her for 4 years now.

Wolfiefan · 09/02/2022 20:45

@JamSandwich0 that’s lucky but allergies can also worsen.

Yes, we didn't bring her home knowing he was allergic it took some figuring out why he was becoming ill. Thankfully sorted itself out before we had to make any decisions

Wolfiefan · 09/02/2022 20:50

@JamSandwich0 so glad it worked out. I’ve developed a cat and dog allergy. I have two of each. 🤦‍♀️

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 09/02/2022 20:53

2 dcats and 4 ddogs here. Take antihistamines and wash hands often. Preferable to no dpets

Stroppypants · 09/02/2022 20:58

I’m very allergic to some dog breeds but not others. Labs, jack russels, French bulldogs and sausage dogs are the worst.
Ok with non shedding dogs like poodle mixes, bedlington and for some reason whippets. It can really depend on breeds but I can’t see your reaction getting better really.
I think you need to step back and do a bit more research.

RandomMess · 09/02/2022 21:00

I'm allergic to mine, the first 3 weeks were bloody awful.

Now so long as I don't stroke them and then touch my eyes or let them lick or nuzzle my face I'm fine.

Don't need to take anti histamines anymore either.

DoucheCanoe · 09/02/2022 21:04

@Wolfiefan I'm sure the OP is aware of the signs of a puppy farmer.

Some dogs are bred and sold legitimately not all are guilty of animal abuse!

Whatifitallgoesright · 09/02/2022 21:05

Shave the bastard.

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 09/02/2022 21:09

Thank you @DoucheCanoe. You are correct.

I don't want a dog I can't pet and cuddle tbh. That is the whole point. I don't really fancy antihistamines for the next 12 years either.

Good points about going back and the possibilities of a cat living there too. I never would have thought of that!

I could cry, honestly!

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 09/02/2022 21:14

@DoucheCanoe I’m not.
Decent breeders don’t post pics of cute puppies in online adverts. They generally avoid online selling altogether.
Good dog breeders exist. But you won’t find them on Pets4homes and its ilk.

RandomMess · 09/02/2022 21:17

Have you considered a Devon or Cornish Rex cat?? Indoor breed though and most are a bit mischievous.

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 09/02/2022 21:17

It wasn't an online advert. A friend send me a photo of her friends pups. I can assure you I was vetted too.

Now can we get back to talking about what I'm going to do.....

OP posts:
Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 09/02/2022 21:19

@RandomMess I have a cat allergy, sadly.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 09/02/2022 21:27

Ask to visit again?
Ask if they have a cat?
I have an allergy. I chose a pedigree and spent as much time as possible with as many examples of that breed as I could. Luckily I never reacted.

Beamur · 09/02/2022 21:30

I have cats but react to strange cats.
I'd try a bit more exposure before you decide. Daily antihistamines would be a pain.

ButtockUp · 10/02/2022 17:23

Definitely go back and see if the also have cats.
Good luck OP!

FourChimneys · 10/02/2022 17:42

I worked with someone who was mildly allergic for the first couple of days. They suddenly had a worse reaction (proved to be from the dog in tests) and ended up in intensive care for a night or so. The dog obviously had to be rehomed.

Just so you know to be vigilant OP.

Bettybantz · 10/02/2022 17:45

Bit strange that it started 20 mins after you got home. I’m allergic to cats (except my own) and it usually starts in the room with them.
