Excessive thirst and night time urinating

I have a Drs appointment but not for a couple of weeks and not sure how much of this is in my head. I drink loads of water, glasses and glasses a day. But also have an ever increasing need to get out of bed for a wee (3 times last night). I have been trying to drink a bit less water to stop this but I am so thristy and mouth dry when I dont keep chugging it down. The bit that I think is in my head is that I am also up and down to the bathroom about 3 times before I actually go to sleep, each time to passing the tiniest amount, I think this is anxiety about waking up so many times in the night and being exhausted. It has been getting gradually worse but my sleep has been crap during the pandemic, so I am also not sure if I just sleep so lightly now that anything would wake me.

I am wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and has any tips to help, or advice on what to say if Dr is dismissive?

I don't think I can have developed Diabetes as I am not overweight and do lots of exercise, pretty good diet etc. I'm only just 40, but maybe I just have the bladder of a 90 year old nowSad

Do you feel better now @tazzy73, have you had to change your diet?

Thanks @terfydactyl (great name), sorry that you don't have an answer to your woes.

I will make a note of all the possibilities listed above and mention to the Dr when I get to soeak with them.

No medication whatsoever Ragz...

Not had a drink since 8pm as sat posting here and the cat has gone to sleep on me, but going to have to grab one as totally parched and then the nighttime cycle will begin again.

We are currently having our bathroom done so only toilet is down stairs, so at least I am getting plenty of nocturnal steps in.

I'd cut out sugars and simple carbs immediately and get tested ASAP.

@DialsMavis

Are you feeling better now *@FantasticFebruary*? I just about still get dinner invites as a vegan, think they would dry up completely if I was a vegan low carber Grin

That's worrying @Goofbawl, I hope he gets answers soon! Its very easy for me to say he should keep pushing whilst trying to wimp out of ringing for a faster appointment for myself...

@DialsMavis

Unfortunately not, but definitely better when on the LC wagon than when I jump off for a bit.

I'm vegetarian, so understand about dinner invites as a Very Low Carb vegetarian, I'm not high on invite lists where food is involved! Ie everything in the U.K.!!

Same symptoms as yourself;I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes.

Luckily it's manageable if it is T2 diabetes;dietary changes and medication helps massively.

Although you can't get rid of T2 diabetes entirely you can put it into remission and get your blood sugars back into normal range.

Cheekypeach · 09/02/2022 23:43

What you describe are the exact symptoms I had before being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I was in my 20s when I was diagnosed, it can happen at any age. It’s a medical emergency though - I would try for an urgent GP appointment tomorrow, otherwise 111.

tazzy73 · 09/02/2022 23:55

@DialsMavis

I started Metaformin 500mg twice daily. I'm watching my carbs and taking more exercise.
It was like a wake up call, eating lots of crap on night shift in work so that's changed.
Most of all I've looked at portion control, I do cook from fresh all the time but its all pasta, rice, cream, cheese etc. So I'm looking at food in a different way.
I have lost 10 lb in just over a month. I check my sugars and they are better now than what they were a month ago.
So if it is diabetes, its all manageable.

HTH, Tazzy.

I agree it's a medical emergency if type 1.

You say it's been coming for a while. That is what happens - thirst etc and seeming to cope with that for quite a while, then it reaches a tipping point and very very quickly you become extremely unwell, blue light to hospital majorly ill. So best to get diagnosed before that point and prevent it happening.

Good luck. If you get to see a GP, take a wee sample for them to test for sugar. Eat something with carbs 2 hours before your appointment so if they test blood sugar, it will show if you have an impairment.

Thanks so much everyone, 3 toilet trips in the night again so feeling completely shattered, will get on the phone at 8am

I have just looked at my food diary to see if I have been eating more junk than I realise and I have had a measly hot cross bun this week and some wine 2 nights last weekend, so will be exceedingly pissed off if I have to even further reduce this Smile

But I do have seedy toast most lunchtimes with soup, and All bran (cardboard Grin) with berries and soya yoghurt for breakfast, so quite a lot of carbs really.

I really appreciate the responses and will update how I get on.

Had a call back from the surgery and the earliest they can do bloods is Monday, so have taken that appointment and will call 111 if anything escalates, I will also watch what I eat sugar and carb wise until then. Thank you everyone Smile.

I was also going to mention diabetes insipidus too - please do some reading on this

Wimblingwombling · 10/02/2022 09:20

Agree with previous poster. Diabetes sounds like it fits but also check calcium levels for potential primary hyperparathyroidism

Did you manage to get to the bottom of this? Are you feeling any better?
