Food waste apps

Does anyone on here have any experience of using food waste apps, like olio, too good to go, karma? I'm considering starting to use one to cut back on how much I'm spending, plus it's perfectly in date food for free.

I've downloaded Olio but there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest locally. I'll keep checking it though.

I really like too good to go; it's not free, but cheap enough and has a decent range of choices near me.

I like too good to go, only used it a couple of times. My first bag was really amazing, second was ok value. Greggs ones seem amazing value for money and Morrisons seems very hit and miss with mostly fruit and veg but some people getting gone off veg. I got the bags as a treat (Waitrose and m&s), it didn’t save much as I wouldn’t of purchased those things. Bit of excitement too! My friend had one that was one big pizza and a ton of choritzo!

Great thanks for the replies, I'll try this out!

I use Olio, there's a woman who collects stuff from Tescos and she lives on the next street I get stuff every few days I love it!

Olio is great if you are in an area it's got buy in from local tescos or prets.
My area has about 10 Tesco express that all donate as well as a couple of prets.
There is a huge amount of food given away everyday. Only annoyance is things like pre packed sandwiches have to be collected the same day so often very late by the time they are uploaded onto the app.
Also don't be tricked into paying for a subscription when you download. It's very much a free app but I've heard people say the donation it asks for is often mistaken as an obligation to join the app.

I use TGTG and Olio and am about to sign up to be an Olio distributor. The TGTG bags are a bit hit and miss, the Spar one I had was shite and the stuff was months past the best before date. The one I got this week from a local petrol station (Costa and Budgens inside) had meat and ready meals so was fab value. I consider them more like an exciting treat though, rather than saving money.
Olio collection today (7 mile round trip) was worth the fuel cost. 4 lemons, 2 packs of English muffins, 2 baguettes (will have with our beef stew later), 2 packs of chillies, 2 bags of custard donuts (gave a pack to next door) and a huge bag of chocolate twist pastry things, bag of carrots and 2 packs of little lettuces.

I've only used TGTG, I find it wonderful for indie shops especially bakeries and veg shops.

Not keen on the chain bags, getting three curly sandwiches in costa vs two sourdough loaves or a massive bag of fruit and veg from local shops. No competition

NannyGythaOgg · 27/02/2022 18:34

I use Olio and my fridge is now full to bursting with home made soup. Even when the veg is a bit past it's best it is perfectly good for soup.

I've also had a number of bunches of flowers, which is great because I love havin fresh flowers but they are too expensive to buy freuently.

I use too good to go and I also use a community fridge larder, I pay £3.50 per week and I can have 14 items of fresh or cupboard food

MysteriousMonkey · 02/03/2022 13:31

I pick up for Olio and distribute and it works really well. I signed up a year ago and nothing much happened for a while. Now I do five pick ups and also collect things we need from other Olioers for myself. Has really helped.

I also use TGTG. First Morris ons box was brilliant, second and third were terrible. Greggs is consistently fab and have done a petrol station one which was great, another which didn't have anything after all! And a few others, some good, some okay.

Recommend getting both apps. Last month my food bill was half what it was previously!

We like TGTG for Greggs and M&S!

But as a pp said, more for a fun silly treat than money saving, although I have had some good ones.

emmathedilemma · 02/03/2022 14:33

I tried to good to go at Morrisons. Firstly the bag wasn't ready when I got there (I'd ordered it in the morning for 9pm collection) so I had to wait ages while they ran round the store assembling it. Another person came in while I was waiting so I don't know why they weren't expecting us.
I'd have been better off just going round the store and picking yellow-stickered items that I could have used to actually make a meal with. I got 3 loaves of cheap white bread (lucky I had space in the freezer but I rarely eat sliced bread), a pack of marinated salmon skewers, a cabbage that lasted for over a week, a multipack of lemon mousses and one of kids jelly pots (they had really long BB4 dates on so not sure why), and a few bits of prepacked fruit and a bag of lettuce.
I've seen good reviews for Greggs but haven't tried it as there isn't one I can get to for the pick up times.
