Trimdon Village in County Durham

Emmaline4252 · 08/02/2022 22:12

I’m moving to the North East, with my daughter, to start a new job and I was looking at properties in Trimdon village. I saw some reasonably cheap houses for sale in the old part and appears to have a village feel and wondered what the area is like in terms of safety, as I’m from the Midlands. The area looks lovely. Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

It's cheap for a reason. Trimdon/Fishburn aren't great. Sedgefield is OK but other than that you may need to look a bit further afield. The majority of the villages in the area are old mining villages so the village feel they have is definitely of that ilk

Longdistance · 08/02/2022 22:33

Trimdon’s not great. What’s your budget?
My mil lives in Seaham, that has its dodgy parts, but she lives in the Dene area and that’s nice (well I think it is).

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2022 22:42

My dad’s birthplace. I wouldn’t want to live there, though. Sedgefield is nice.

Gilead · 08/02/2022 22:45

Trimdon isn’t the best area, Perhaps look the other side of Durham?

Hellocatshome · 08/02/2022 22:47

There is a reason why its cheap, generally speaking you want to avoid any ex mining villages in the Durham area.

Trimdon Village is the better of all the Trimdons. Although Tony Blair lived in Trimdon Colliery.....The houses overlooking the green and church are nice and the (only) pub is well run and caters to a variety of customers. There also is working man's club (probably renewed now!). There's a Co-op, a couple of hair/beauty places but not a lot else.
Sedgefield is in a different league and is reflected in the house prices. Many very nice pubs/foody places and a nice Italian restaurant. Lots of tea shops/lunch cafes. Independent shops eg ethical greengrocers, vinyl record store, independent beer and gin shop etc. couple of the village shops and takeaways look rundown which is a shame as the rest is very picturesque. A good co-op and a big sainsburys on the outskirts.
Two primary schools very good and secondary school is outstanding and has just won TES school of the year.
Off to name change now haha!

It's a Durham pit village, it comes with all the upsides and downsides of those areas. Pockets of mass depravation and all the issues that come with it, but also a community at heart. However it is a fairly static population.

As others have said Sedgefield is nearby as is the likes of Spennymoor, both of which have a more transient population. Are you looking to buy or rent?

Trimdon Village itself isn't quite 'put mentality' in the way some other areas near by are. I wouldn't recommend spennymoor to anyone. It's shockingly run down with some pockets of nice new builds. The town centre has a reputation for anti social behaviour and drink fuelled violence at night (recent stabbing for eg).

Look at Coxhoe instead.

Emmaline4252 · 09/02/2022 14:35

Thanks so much everyone, your thoughts and advice have been very helpful and appreciated. It's disappointing as I thought the old church and the green in the village, where the houses go from £120 000 to £345 000, was lovely and would be safe. My budget is £140 000 but ideally would like it to be on a bus route to Durham as my daughter will be taking the bus. Durham is just too expensive as is Lanchester. Many thanks.

Look at Sherburn Village, just outside Durham and the Gilesgate / Newton Hall areas of Durham City. They are nice, safe, good access routes etc.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/02/2022 14:42

What is you work location and dd school location?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/02/2022 14:45

There's a one in Giles gate for 150k - may be worth looking slightly over budget in the hope of negotiating

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/02/2022 14:47

Oh and another Gilesgate one for 140

Whitefire · 09/02/2022 14:48

There just isn't much at Trimdon and the bus service outside the main hours isn't great.

Trimdon village is lovely and safe. Bus services to Durham at peak times are pretty good. The local comp doesn't have a sixth form so the services to Durham and Darlington are good around those times to the various sixth form colleges. Sedgefield you can get a house unwell under budget in the gables area. They are small but a 3 bed for two would be canny. Some have better sized gardens than others and have conservatories as well. The 'trees' estate is a 1950's ex council house area that is almost exclusively privately owned now and well sought after. Maple grove has a very good sized property up on rightmove currently that needs a bit of cosmetic care and is under £125 k. There are often cute 2 bed old cottages around your budget as well. I guess it all boils down to what's important to you. Lanchester is lovely but £££. There are other small towns and villages that are hidden gems but you need to know the area well to find them. There's also a new estate that's just been built in Sherburn.

Not much for sale in Coxhoe atm.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 09/02/2022 18:16

Gilesgate would be a fab option as it's an easy bus ride into Durham or not too bad a walk.

That looks fab! Bowburn is great for road transport links but I have no knowledge of public transport. Although I do suspect it's ok into Durham at peak times

There's a big new build estate just outside coxhoe that looks nice

It does. There's another one by the Amazon place as well. Bowburn is fine for buses into Durham and it has a brand new primary school.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 09/02/2022 20:33

Gilesgate is okay, but avoid Sherburn Road Estate. It's also a very busy area and quite built up.
