Hi. Please could you recommend your favourites west end musicals that will be showing in March, suitable for a (young) 12 yr old girl?
Thanks!

Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat

Six

My 13yo loved Hamilton, she is obsessed with it and plays the soundtrack constantly. We were due to see Six but cancelled due to covid,so still have that to come. I thinkshe would enjoy Matilda too, and both mine loved Wicked!

We saw the Frozen musical a few weeks ago with Dd11 and loved it. I had expected it to be more oriented to younger children but it wasn’t at all.

We loved Wicked and I don't tend to like musicals...

WheekestLink · 08/02/2022 21:07

Six or Wicked, she'll love either of those but Six is just the best night and you come away feeling so happy.

If you want to do Matilda and don't mind being a bit more last minute then enter the lottery.
Today tix do special offers on the day but you get told at 10 what shows are on offer and then you need to be quick. You need to register.
As for shows my 12 year old has seen Matilda 4 times, wicked twice and Mary poppins twice (lots of nice friends treating her). Her favourite is Matilda. She wants to see Six. She just saw Hamilton and didn't love it so much.

Six.
Hamilton.

Quartz2208 · 08/02/2022 21:39

Hamilton is the most amazing musical seen it once with DD and taking DS next time but it isnt one I would go in cold to

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 08/02/2022 21:43

Mathilda or Mary poppins would be great. I think we preferred Mary poppins tbh. But they’re both good.

We watched Cinderella in the summer. Dd13 loved it. But I’d say she’s a mature 13, it might be a bit grown up if your dd is a young 12, but she may well love it.

The dds also really enjoyed hairspray when they were younger. I’m not sure if it’s currently on though.
We've just been to see Six and although DD2 (age 12) liked it, there are some innuendos and sexual gestures so aimed at a little older and she says she much preferred Matilda which we saw last year.
Wicked is great but as the seating is in line with the seat in front and not slightly offset, coupled with a gentle rake, it's not the best show for those slightly shorter.

Not sure if you were aware but London Theatres have their New Year Sale still running in March so discounted seats for certain shows. Worth looking at officiallondontheatre.com/new-year-sale/
For what it is worth OP, my 12 year old didn't love wicked (neither did I). Matilda was really really brilliant

OutdoorType · 08/02/2022 22:27

Another vote for Matilda. We've seen several musicals but this was first one we saw with DD and I think the best.

gogohm · 08/02/2022 22:29

Mine loved Mary poppins, wicked, hairspray, Matilda, legally blonde, shrek from memory but also we saw les mis and miss Saigon by 12 which they also loved, we saw, turandot, carmen and Aida too on the opera side around that age.

I love theatre so have taken them from babies in appropriate venues

Greatauntdymphna · 08/02/2022 22:31

Six
&Juliet (brilliant)
Come from Away (also brilliant)
Hamilton

HelenaHandcart0 · 08/02/2022 22:31

Six is great but quite a lot shorter than most musicals. I don’t think there was an interval.

TinaYouFatLard · 08/02/2022 22:34

I think Matilda still ranks top in our house! DD is 13 and we both loved Six but I’m sure there was some slightly raunchy suggestion which might be worth considering if your DD is a very young 12. I’m taking DD to Wicked in half term - we both can’t wait!

HelenaHandcart0 · 08/02/2022 22:47

Oh good point, I’d forgotten that one of the queens’ songs had a theme of being ‘groomed’ as a young girl but I’d still say the way it was all done makes it okay for a 12 year old.

calmrood · 08/02/2022 22:49

My dd preferred wicked over Matilda.
