What age did you stop reading aloud at night to your dc?

My dc are 10 & 8 & I still read aloud to them for around 30 mins a night, they get an hour of reading time then before lights out. Just wondering what age people generally stop?

Still read to 8yo DS2 every night. 10yo DS1 stopped wanting to join us just before Christmas. He still hovers if he knows we're at a good bit (currently on HP) but mostly just reads to himself. I expect it will last longer with DS2 as he's dyspraxic and struggles to keep focus when reading to himself.

chillichoclove · 07/02/2022 21:48

I dread the day. My husband still reads to me sometimes. Such a luxury.

Ironmanrocks · 07/02/2022 21:49

I stopped reading to mine after we finished that last of the Harry Potter's about a year ago, so 10. Yesterday he asked me to start it up again! 😊

Whilst they were in primary we read to them every night. It stopped more or less when they went to secondary school but we still all listened to audio books as a family

bitingcat · 07/02/2022 21:52

Dd is 15 and we still read together every night. She's still keen so I'm more than happy to keep going. We've read a couple of GCSE texts as well as lots of great YA fiction.

2anddone · 07/02/2022 21:54

Stopped for us when they went to secondary school though dc are 16 and 13 and I still read them the night before Christmas every Christmas Eve at their request, I don't think (and really hope) that I will ever stop doing that.

Snow1n · 07/02/2022 21:55

I still read to my nearly 11 year old, but he also reads aloud to me, and at other times reads to himself. He is quite a book lover and we're always in the library ordering books in for him! My eldest why is almost 17, I stopped reading to probably around 12/13 and while he loves books he doesnt tend to read that often

Svara · 07/02/2022 21:56

I think 6. At 7 he was reading Redwall and didn't like being read aloud to as it was too slow.

00100001 · 07/02/2022 21:57

@MarineBlue33

Stealth brag or what. No i don't read to 9 yo. 6 yo a bit here and there
🙄
toomuchlaundry · 07/02/2022 21:57

@MarineBlue33 why is it a stealth brag?

DS’s Primary School recommended you carry on reading with your child all the way through to Y6

DistrictCommissioner · 07/02/2022 21:58

I stopped reading to my eldest when she was about 11. Mostly because of the time it freed up as also had 2 other kids to read to!

Still reading to my 10 year old, and separately to my 6 year old. Don’t know when we will stop!

OutlookStalking · 07/02/2022 22:00

Around 9 here when they were wanting to get through the story faster if they read it themselves. They read about 20-30mins st night.

LadyCleathStuart · 07/02/2022 22:01

Stealth brag??

My eldest is 8 and a good but lazy reader so I envisage having to read to him for a while yet but I don't mind as I enjoy the books too (currently on the Percy Jackson series). I always thought it would end by secondary school but I will keep doing it as long as he wants.

DD is 5 and wants to read herself, she is only just learning obviously so has to let me do most of it but I think as soon as she can she will be off reading on her own.

Hellohah · 07/02/2022 22:04

DS was 11 ... I remember we read The Hobbit and LOTR, a page each.

I had to give up when he asked for The Silmarillion. I'm a good reader, but it stumped me. Just told him he was on own with that one 😂😂

MarineBlue33 · 07/02/2022 22:07

@toomuchlaundry
Everyone knows that reading to children is great.
This thread started as a self congratulatory pat on the back by the OP is answered by people who do likewise- read to their children well into upper KS2 and beyond.
Many parents who won't post here, neither have the time or the inclination to read to DC. Or their DC don't want it.
Hope that's clear enough

betwixtlives · 07/02/2022 22:09

maybe 10?

Forgetaboutme · 07/02/2022 22:12

Glad you asked this. I was wondering myself. I stopped reading to my eldest ds at 8. He was never really into books and it felt very forced. He basically never reads. My youngest is now 9 and loves being read to still. He also loves reading his own book afterwards too. I had been wondering if he's getting too old now but clearly not. Will keep going until he wants to stop.

RoseMartha · 07/02/2022 22:16

About 7 because they could not care less if I read to them or not and would get up and wander off until i was reading it to myself. So I gave up on it.

toomuchlaundry · 07/02/2022 22:16

I read my old childhood books to DS, books he probably wouldn’t have picked himself. But he enjoyed listening to them

KittensTeaAndCake · 07/02/2022 22:17

That’s a good point, I read that at Christmas every year too and mine are older than yours!! They humour me bless them.

It’s very very sad if you think this thread is a stealth brag Confused

Minniem2020 · 07/02/2022 22:19

Around 10 for DD. I used to love it, the end of the day all snuggled up with no distractions. I was hoping to do the same with DS(3) but every time I start reading he turns the pages over and says "the end"Grin

beautifullymad · 07/02/2022 22:20

About 12, then they started to swap and now they read to me. It's very nice 😁

Tittyfilarious81 · 07/02/2022 22:22

My son didn't want me to read to him anymore when he got 10 and my daughter was about the same age I've let them decide when they wanted me to stop reading to them I'd still do it now if they asked

DancingQueen2018 · 07/02/2022 22:22

I still read to my nearly 11 year old, but mostly more difficult books she wouldn’t read to herself, she usually reads for half an hour or so afterwards. I love it!

falgelednl · 07/02/2022 22:24

My DS8 reads aloud to either me or his dad every night. He also reads by himself. We live these snuggly times - his favourite is when it’s the three of us together.
My DDs are 13 and 15 and we still read books together. Not every night but we often share a book over a few weeks.
They also suggest books they are enjoying and I read them and we discuss them. I read their GCSE texts with them and a lot of YA (DD13 loves dystopian novels and DD15 loves LGBTQ+ stuff) which is a great way into chat about books and other stuff.
All tutor groups at the girls’ secondary school have read aloud sessions where the tutor reads and all the students have their own text to follow along.
All three of mine love reading and yes, that makes me happy!
