Prescription swimming goggles for small 6yo

Any tips for where to get strong prescription (-13) swimming goggles for a very little girl? Opticians haven't been able to recommend anywhere and we're getting desperate.

We last bought them online 2 years ago but her prescription was around -8 at that time, which is the limit on all the sites I've found so far....?

Have you tried Rxsport.co.uk?

I found them very helpful with my mothers very complicated prescription for goggles after a bout of bacterial meningitis.

How little? These do age 4. Expensive but they make your actual prescription. Up to -14 it says.

Thanks @Machina01 - I did look but couldn't see any kids' frames.

@PostThenGhost those seem to go to -12, but that is a huge improvement, thank you. We might end up remortgaging and going with that.

Possibly a silly question but how unmanageable is -8 Vs -13 - clearly it's a bit crap but if it's just a case of stopping one hitting the end of the lane a difference might not be a catastrophe?

These say look like they go to -10.

I definitely used to use -2.25 when my eyes were -5.5 until I could afford new goggles - it wasn't ideal but it was manageable and might be sensible til her eyesight settles?

This is a really good question, @Gladioli23 - honestly I'm not sure. My prescription is -2.5 and I feel really disoriented without my glasses; but you might be right and it might be fine!

It's more than just in the pool, though, she has to navigate to and from poolside; in and out of changing rooms, steps, foot dips, etc. Looking up at the clock, reading cues from a teacher on the other side of the pool telling her to come etc.

I think a lower prescription will be workable if not perfect. I'm -4 and can manage to get myself into the pool, swim etc. without correction. No chance of looking at the lane clock, but I use it as an excuse to not lead the lane and just follow someone else.

You can also take glasses pool side in all likelihood - I have certainly never locked my glasses in my locker in my memory. I either hang them on a hook next to the pool in a bag if it has those, or pop them out the way on one of the many random bits of wall all the swimming pools I frequent seem to have.

My eyesight is about -6 and I definitely couldn't tell what someone at the other end of the pool is doing without glasses because they'd essentially just vanish, but if I go for a swim with a friend say and am therefore not doing "proper" swimming with my head underwater I can navigate lane, swimming pool steps etc without glasses or goggles. I couldn't do it somewhere new for sure but it's not difficult in my home pool.

Obviously I'm aware -6 is a massively different beast from -13 but just thinking of the difference between say -10 and -13 might be feasible if her eyesight (and head size!) is still changing regularly.

How old is she? I am pretty sure I had adult goggles from about age 8 but obviously one would need to do some careful checks on size before ordering prescription ones on spec!

Phormiumjester · 07/02/2022 21:00

I don't think they recommend using the wrong prescription do they? I'd be more disoriented with an in-between prescription without my -8's.

I had prescription goggles as an 11 year old I left them at the bus stop. My mum was furious! 🙈

Gladioli23 · 07/02/2022 21:04

Hard to tell I think because no one is ever going to recommend using the wrong prescription! Only question is whether it's better than nothing or can actually damage your eyes.

My understanding is it might be irritating or even give you a headache if you don't get along with it, but it won't damage your eyes, but obviously one would want to do ones own research on that I expect.
