Hi all

Wondering if anyone can make me feel a little better :(

A van was parked on main road double red. I know no excuse I didn’t see it and drove too close and my back wheel hit the front right side of his wheel and a bit of car body. Scrapes and black marks where on his van.

I have two years NCB so I guess I will loose it? And insurance will double? Has anyone been in this situation and could tell me what to expect?

Thank you :( please be gentle I’m already feeling rubbish :((

I can't advise about your NCB as I protect mine but my insurance didn't increase much when I reversed into another car.

Can you afford to offer to pay for the damage if it's not too much? Bodywork is really expensive though.

Wheresmycider · 07/02/2022 18:10

Depends if you/they make an insurance claim or not. I did similar, left my details on the parked car for the owner. They got a couple of quotes to repair the damage and I paid the invoice.
Is that an option for you?

Kitkat05 · 07/02/2022 18:19

@roastingmichael @Wheresmycider thank you for the reply.

Sorry I forgot to mention he said it was company van hired. He got my name and number and said the company will call. I notified my insurance company. It happened late so I think the company will tomorrow.

Will I need to pay anything towards repair or will my insurance company do that?

You’ll need to pay the excess which is normally around £250

Kitkat05 · 07/02/2022 18:23

@MsWalterMitty thanks for that. I will have a look now. Hopefully it’s £250 and not more :(

You'll pay the xs (voluntary and compulsory). You will likely lose your NCB but in terms of your renewal doubling? Unlikely. Why don't you go to a comparison site now and get a quote for your details including the fault claim with 0 years NCB and see what that looks like?
Obviously rates change but it will give you an idea.

PolicecarOnAToe · 07/02/2022 18:30

I drove into a parked car a few years ago. I claimed on my insurance and it went up from £70ish a month to around £95, so not a massive increase like I was expecting it to be.

What will happen:

You need to ring your insurer and report. They will take details of what happened.

Your insurance company will deal with him and pay for repairs.

Presuming you have fully comprehensive in which case they will arrange for your repairs and you will just have to pay any excess. If you only have third part fire and theft you will have to pay for any repairs to your vehicle.

Your premium will go up a bit. I think 2 years ncb is about 10% discount so not a lot.

That’s it. We all make mistakes. That’s why we have car insurance. Forget about it and move on.

Only if OP’s claiming for damage to their own car

Louisianagumbo · 07/02/2022 19:19

It happens. That's what car insurance is for. It doesn't go up much. And if you go on a comparison site you might find another company who will do you a better deal. Lots of good deals around at the moment.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 07/02/2022 19:26

When you say "insurance will double", I'm afraid that will be about right. If I remember correctly 2 years NCD would normally be 40% and then with higher underlying premium, it's likely to be somewhere around double.

Be sure to shop around at renewal, as you may find that your current insurer hikes it a lot, but a different insurer may be cheaper.

Helenluvsrob · 07/02/2022 19:26

It’s why you pay insurance. Don’t let it upset you a bit.

Don’t be tempted to pay. It sounds like it could be expensive if they choose to do so and you can’t be arguing where they get the repair if you’ve caused the problem IYSWIM

Bummer OP -- Try not to despair. Shit happens.
