Help me get up in the mornings!

I’m not a morning person, never have been but it seems to be harder and harder to get out of bed recently!
Of course with kids to get ready and to school I always do get up but usually end up rushing around which makes me feel worse!
It doesn’t seem to matter if I go to bed earlier, and as loud as my alarm can go I still switch it off in my sleep!
Do you have any tips to help me get up and make my morning routine more relaxed and productive?

Following!

No tips but I'm the same, always manage to get up but feel like a zombie until well past 9. Getting up earlier just makes the worst part of the day longer. I just do as much as possible the night before.

My dc are 8 and 10 and not morning people either so I have to get them out of bed too! And Dh!

MiconiumHappens · 06/02/2022 23:17

Place alarm clock on the other side of the room, so you have to get up out of bed to turn it off? I used to struggle with switching my alarm off in my sleep and it works for me.

WheresMyAlex · 06/02/2022 23:17

I’m definitely miserable and zombiefied until well past 9 too. Sadly my kids are morning people, and I struggle to deal with their 7am energy!

Normally what works for me is I set my alarm on my phone and put it at the furthest corner of the room away from the bed so when it goes off I HAVE to get out of bed and turn it off. Once i've done that I pop to the bathroom for a wee and brush my teeth and then just sort of go from there.
However I'm currently experiencing bone shattering exhaustion (awaiting blood results) so I'm finding that a few times I have just turned the alarm off and gone back to bed for a bit.

WheresMyAlex · 06/02/2022 23:19

@MiconiumHappens (your name gave me a chuckle!) I have tried that, but I always end up getting back into bed! Ridiculous I know, I sound like a lazy teenager.

What time do you go to bed? I am a member of the 5am Club but I go to bed at 9pm.

Josephincluded · 07/02/2022 07:07

Set 2 or 3 alarms and try again not having them next to the bed so,you have to get up. Put a lamp on a timer switch.

What time do you go to bed at?

WaterBottle123 · 07/02/2022 07:11

I was the same and then I started getting up at 6am to exercise, after which I feel great and full of energy

OooohBabyBaby · 07/02/2022 07:15

Lumi light. Then you wake up to ‘natural’ light and feels less crap. Alongside an alarm but have your alarm a place you have to physically get up and switch it off

Do not snooze will make you feel worse Smile

RainbowToes · 07/02/2022 07:28

I use a light box in the winter. Definitely gives me more energy and makes it easier to get up in the morning.

theneverendinglaundry · 07/02/2022 07:34

I also use a lumie light, it really helps me on these dark mornings!

Knitter99 · 07/02/2022 07:34

Another vote for the Lumie light alarm. Everyone in our family has one. Ds14 can usually sleep through his but everyone else wakes up. I couldn't get through winter without mine

Mykittensmittens · 07/02/2022 07:37

Lumie here too

Or if I get up for a wee anytime after 2am I open the curtains a crack. Even now at 6.45 there is a tiny bit of natural light which makes it so much easier to wake up.

WheresMyAlex · 07/02/2022 08:00

Ooh, I will have a look at the lumie light.
My bed times are a bit all over the place to be honest, but I’m definitely not a night owl either, I’m shattered by half 9.

Is your general health OK?

WheresMyAlex · 07/02/2022 21:03

@ClariceQuiff good question, I’ve got a bit of weight to lose, and in the last couple of weeks I’ve started taking an iron supplement to see if that helps. So really I’m not sure.

Another vote for Lumie Sunrise clock. It goes from off to bright slowly during a half hour period. My radio alarm comes on at 6.30am just as the “sunrise” is at its brightest. The difference to how it makes me feel in the mornings in unbelievable.

Houseplantmad · 07/02/2022 22:47

@AlexaWhatsMyUsername I'm intrigued to know more about the light. How does it make you feel now that you didn't feel before?

Improving your general health and fitness is likely to make you feel less tired - it sounds like you've made a good start on this. This sounds like it may be a general lack of energy rather than specifically a morning problem - if you can improve your overall wellbeing you might find the problem goes away, or at least you might become either a lark or a night owl instead of being tired at both ends of the day.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/02/2022 07:57

Get an old fashioned, very noisy mechanical alarm clock and put it on the other side of the room, so you have to get out of bed to shut it up.

That was the only way for me, when I sometimes had to be up at 3.30 am for work.

spagbog5 · 08/02/2022 08:17

I am NOT a morning person so tried to make mornings easier when the kids were younger by getting breakfast stuff out the night before and everyone as ready as possible ie lay out complete outfits, make lunches etc before bed but ultimately I just used to have to push through it.
Even now I set a 10 minute alarm so I can scroll my phone in bed before getting up but once that goes I just have to get going.
Decluttering the house has also made a massive difference to how I cope in the morning as everyone can find everything and it's easy to tidy up in a few minutes as there's no junk lying around and things have a home .

It’s the difference between feeling like I’ve been jolted awake by an alarm to how I feel waking up naturally.
