I've had an email sent to me today, from my email address saying they've accesed my camera etc and filmed me masturbating to adult sites (I've never been on adult sites ) and that unless I send them 500bitcoins they'll send it to eeveryone.
They won't send a made up video of me will they?

This is the email

@3peassuit

What a nasty scam. Would the police investigate?
GrinGrin

This one's been doing the rounds for years.

I just looked at whats in my spam box today - one from the central bank of Nigeria, one from a prince who will give me $10,000,000 if I move some money for him and a couple of these blackmail attempts - one for porn (prob the same as the OP as its 500 Bit coins!) and one threatening to out me to my boss as a drug addict . NONE of these are real.

Here's a flavour from my spam box....

This might come to you as a surprise but what I'm about to tell you is nothing but the reality about your fund which has been held for so long with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Do you know that all the money you have been sending to the officials for one certificate clearance or the other is being used against you?
Well, this might sound strange but I am taking this bold step because of my religious belief as a Christian. The truth is there a lot of forces working against you right from the last central bank Governor and the current Governor with other top officials of all the commercial banks in Nigeria, they have been frustrating you by delaying your payment.
There is a way I can assist you get your fund without further delay and avoid unnecessary expenses; it is risky on my own-side to exposes the secret of authorities but one has to take it because I am not happy as things is going against a humanity, I have directed many people through this way, and they receive their long-awaited outstanding payment.
Get back to me as soon as you get this mail so that I will be in a better position to know what to do. Waiting for your immediate reply to my private address

Yours sister in the lord

Just change all of your passwords. Nothing will happen. It’s a common scam

tempester28 · 06/02/2022 20:36

It’s an old scam just ignore it

Annabelle69 · 06/02/2022 20:45

Common scam. I've had this email.

Aside from that I salways put some black Gorilla tape over my laptop camera when I'm not using it. Same with my phone as I don't use selfie mode much.

Mark Zuckerberg does this, which tells me all you need to know.

ittakes2 · 06/02/2022 20:51

I had this too and wasn't worried since I have never! I just ignored.

whirlycarly · 06/02/2022 20:53

Got it for the first time today, containing my full address. It is a bit unnerving that they have any of your details even if you know it's a scam.

Norgie · 06/02/2022 20:55

I had the same email some years ago. I just deleted it and nothing more happened.
Around 10 years ago, I got a virus which completely too over my entire laptop screen telling me that I had been viewing child porn ( believe me, I hadn't ) and to pay £100 to free up my screen!
Via another computer I managed to get onto the metropolitan police scam thing for step by step instructions on how to get rid of the virus, and even though I managed to, my laptop never worked properly again 🤬🤬

CoastalWave · 06/02/2022 20:56

I've had about 4 of those!!

I guess it would panic me if i'd done any of those things in the mail, but given I've had a very boring few years, didn't even cross my mind it was anything other than a scam!!

Ignore, delete, forget about it!

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 06/02/2022 21:05

Total scam.....i get this on my work emails...my work screen is a TV so no webcam, in my bored moments I do like to compose replies but they never get sent!

Fatarseflanagan09 · 06/02/2022 21:18

I’ve had that one, ignore it.

Thatswhathappens · 06/02/2022 21:24

I had this on text the other week and it came up as “yourself” that had sent it so it did freak me out a bit! I know it’s a scam but when I googled on line I couldn’t find anything about text messages especially coming from my own number!!

Aquamarine1029 · 06/02/2022 21:27

I've had several similar, telling me that they will send my husband proof of my sordid affairs and use of that married hook-up site, Ashley Madison, or whatever it is. I've never cheated and I've never been to that absurd website. It's laughable, honestly.

SmallOrFarAway · 06/02/2022 21:47

I had exactly this one today too. It had an actual old postal address on (not ever lived there) which threw me for a mo as not had any like that level of detail before. But exH who is techy said it is likely that somewhere an old mailing list has been hacked/sold.

Zilla1 · 06/02/2022 21:49

HNRTT but it is relatively easy to spoof an email address. Have you looked in your sent folder to see if the email you received is there as it would be if they had sent an email from your account - 99% chance it won't be as they haven't hacked your email, just spoofed your email address. If they had hacked your email account then the first thing they would do is change the password so you couldn't get in.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 06/02/2022 22:06

I had this exact email this evening. It was sent from an email address with my maiden name, and gave my dads address as my address (I have never lived there). The address being on there freaked me out a bit, but I knew it was a scam.

ShallWeTalkAboutBruno · 06/02/2022 22:10

I get loads of these. They just go straight to my junk folder.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/02/2022 22:15

I've had the one supposedly form the Metropolitan Police before, where apparently, not only have they change the law so that you can get away with the most horrific crimes if you officially pay them off, but for some reason, they're asking for payment from other UK residents in US$.

I'd had an old desktop that hadn't been online before and I'd decided to connect it to the web for the first time. The very first thing I was poised to do once online was to immediately put an antivirus on it, but these appalling people beat me to it by a minute and locked the screen.

Took me ages with the laptop and a memory stick, downloading a trojan killer and transferring it; but you can be certain that, even if you did capitulate and pay up, there's no way they'd ever be happy with having succeeded in rinsing you (and you might be their 'valuable' 1 in a million success) and simply let you go without trying to tap you for more (and more).

Fayekrista · 06/02/2022 22:17

Tell them hmrc are investigating them for fraud, their cards are going to be cancelled & a warrant issued for their arrest... unless they send all their account details & passwords they will lose their money forever 🤣
You will also before black magic & curse their family lol

daisybrown37 · 06/02/2022 22:18

I got this today. It listed an address that I don’t live at any more (and haven’t for many years) and my computer is not working, so I was tempted to email back and ask them if they could fix it while they were hacking it…..

Fayekrista · 06/02/2022 22:18

Perform... not before lol

Memyselfandfood · 06/02/2022 22:21

I also got this. Highly amusing as i haven't visited the sites, nor has my laptop been with me the last few months…Grin
Well the 24hr deadline has been and gone!
