Want to cover my greys, but allergic to hair dye, help!

I’ve got an important event coming up and would really like to cover my stray greys - last time I had a perm dye done at the hairdressers I had a terrible allergic reaction and have since avoided any colouring (3 years ago!).

Is there any hope for me? Can anyone recommend any allergy safe dyes they’ve used? Even a wash in / out might help, it’s only for a short event. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

What colour is your natural hair? I've used henna from lush with great results

wear a hat.

Daniel Field watercolour? Might not cover grey entirely but it makes mine look like highlights.

What colour is your hair? You could try Superdrug Colour Effects shampoo in, shampoo out colours - they are super cheap too.

I think henna may be an option but you can still be allergic to it so
would need to test first. I became allergic to hair dye during peri menopause and gave up trying to find something,

My natural colour is med-dark brown.

Henna would be an option but as pp said you should still patch test. Natural henna will look like reddish highlights where your greys are. Lush do browner hennas which include indigo, or you can buy henna and indigo online and mix your own.

The Superdrug shampoo-ins I mentioned upthread have several brown options and would be a quick, temporary fix.

What about the wash-in, wash-out stuff?

LoannaJumley · 06/02/2022 11:25

I'm allergic to hair dye too. I have a mix of highlights and then a toner on after that I'm absolutely fine with, no reaction whatsoever.

Thanks everyone, some good tips! I have ordered the Daniel Field one as it says no PPD which I think is what I may have had a reaction to. Imagine I’ll still need to patch test and keep fingers crossed🤞🏻

I use henna plus indigo. It covers grey really well and is good for your hair. I buy powders online, mix with boiling water and olive oil, apply and let it sit for two hours. Blending the henna with indigo gives you a nice brown shade.

@Coffeetree i appreciate this is an old post. If you happen to be online soon can you advise if you mix the boiling water and oo to the henna or the indigo and how much ?

TIA
