Taking my big tub of white powder on holiday

Can’t see this going wrong… Grin

I’m currently taking a supplement to help with the side effects of a condition and with TTC. It comes as a big tub of soluble white powder. Due to go on holiday in Europe in a few weeks and ideally I’d take it with me. It takes a while to build up in your system and I don’t want to potentially confuse or set things back by taking a week out.

DH reckons it’s not worth the hassle, as it’s pretty much impossible to work what restrictions apply to supplements, and it’s going to be a lot harder to explain your way round a mysterious white powder, even if I bring it in the original (oddly massive) tub with proof of purchase. I think better that than to decant a small amount into an unlabelled container or trinket à la Bridget Jones.

On balance he’s probably right but wondering if there’s another way. Anyone else had problems with supplements, mysteriously powdered or otherwise?

My Dad unwisely decanted his bicarbonate of soda ( uses it his repellent trainers) declared the bicarb at Heathrow and Auckland…. No issues…. Although customs deserve Nobel prize if they went near his trainers…

We got a load of grief and the car thoroughly searched on the way back from the French Alps about 25 years ago. The customs fellas were very intrigued by our climbing chalk, despite the car full of climbing gear. They didn’t find anything at all untoward, regardless of their opinions of British “grimpeurs”. But this was a very long time ago, and the white powder chalk was just in little canvas bags, not any kind of packaging.

Customs won't be remotely bothered by a bit of white powder. There are diagnostic tests that show it if is an illegal substance.
Having said that, my puppy had a bad stomach bug, and a friend posted '' Canine herbalistTree root powder'' through my door in a big ziplock bag that looked alarmingly like contraband.
I did go to vets as well.

Now THAT would be a novel way to smuggle contraband...In the little waist 'Sacks' of chalk climbers use.

My parents and brothers were stopped at Dover coming from France , with their caravan in tow...Everything was searched through.
Mum thinks it was because my younger brother was driving an {at the time} expensive car and had 'long' hair...That was about same era as your experience.

I took two 1kg bags of Doves Farm gluten free flour to mauritius so I could bake my husband a birthday cake whilst we were there. We flew via Paris. We were stopped EVERYWHERE.

I knew it was inositol from your OP - just buy the capsules for your trip and then switch back to the powder after

Zandathepanda · 06/02/2022 11:15

I once travelled with a Catholic priest and we got stopped everywhere. It delayed us so much. Tip: make sure any priests you travel with aren’t in their religious dress/ wearing a dog collar. Nightmare.

Nothing useful to add except that it’s brought back memories of my mum thinking it would be a cracking idea to send me off on my school trip to France with two paracetamol in a sandwich bag. The coach got stopped at the ferry and 11 year old me Blushwas convinced I was going to be arrested

MaizeAmaze · 06/02/2022 11:30

95% of the time you won't get stopped.
The times you do, you will want every bit of evidence that it is legal.
In my case, business cards, data sheets, reasonable explanation, everything labeled (no original packaging available, as I'd made the white powder in the lab....).

So, I'd suggest original packaging with the smallest amount you will need - decant the stuff to stay at home.
If, as there have suggested, there are some sachets available, I'd get those.
Enjoy the holiday.

TigerLilyTail · 06/02/2022 12:29

Oh, well, if you can buy sachets, just buy the sachets. It's the easiest way.

Pinetreesfall · 06/02/2022 12:40

You'll be fine. Just carry it in the original packaging.

We are a family of unintentional smugglers - illegal tablets through the UAE (although perfectly legal here) - completely accidentally.
My mother is a great one for carrying scissors (not for any illegal use!) and only been stopped once in Oman for having kitchen scissors in hand luggage.
Having flown regularly all my life I've only been stopped and searched once in Rome as I was travelling alone so they probably thought drugs mule!

@oakleaffy, I’m sure the customs guys at the port of Calais are perfectly used to cars for of British climbers and their equipment. They were just being nobs. We’ve given our chalk and chalk bags away before going home since then.

I’m sure they recognise them for what they are-
Even I as a non climber know them from seeing climbers with them.
Customs staff are not known for their sense of humour either.
