Grey hair advice

Since giving birth to DD (16 months ago) I have sprouted an absolutely ridiculous amount of grey hair. Natural colour is a very dark brown but it's literally only grey hairs that are coming through now. For years I had used black box dye but after DD was born I got it stripped out and hairdresser has used a "number 5" dye on my hair since. Looking to go a medium ash brown (hate red tones) but unsure of how this could be achieved. Don't want to go super dark again as it's very harsh and quite aging
Hairdresser has advised I go blonde but I'm extremely pale with dark eyebrows (typical Irish colouring) so think it would look a bit silly not to mention the upkeep. My hair tends to go very dark even when the hairdresser uses lighter brown dyes.
Will attach photos for reference of my own hair and desired colour. If anyone could advise on what they done when going grey that would be so helpful. I'm only 31 so unfortunately going grey gracefully isn't an option just yet. Pics 1 and 2 my hair. 3 is the colour I would like.

Just for men dye ? It only covers the grey

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/02/2022 14:46

I've got that colouring too and although blonde will look odd against your eyebrows with that much grey upkeep of dark will be just as difficult.

The roots will show worse against dark than blonde so I can see where she's coming from.

My hair is like yours and I've used a number 7 'dark blonde' nutriesse box dye. You can still see the regrowth but not as obviously as with darker colours. It's not what I'd call blonde either! Just an ashy brown.
It won't actually bleach your hair so it can't get too light

Although root coverage is my primary goal @Inthesameboatatmo, I'm also looking to get rid of the reddish tones in the lengths of my hair as I really don't suit red tones, so I think a complete overhaul is needed unfortunately. Do you mind me asking how ypu transitioned to blonde @Fluffycloudland77 and how light did you go? I think blonde hair is stunning but just not sure I have the colouring to pull it off. I know people who are naturally blonde with fair skin and it does look nice but I'm not sure it would suit me.Have attached another photo of what my colouring is like, although I would actually be paler than that. I have mild rosacea also so think that's why I'm so averse to reddy tones

Oh that sounds a lovely colour @postitnot. I do love ashy tones

I went blonde many moons ago and at the time had no grey but I had a blonde base colour with very light Meche highlights!. Which was the fashion then. I had a lot of blonde highlights anyway. Colours moved on since 2000. I dont have a lot of red either and cool toned skin so it was just bleached.

You prefer dark so all you can do is go for an ashy toned dark colour and see how it looks. You can get root touch up sprays and powders now which you couldnt do when I was young.

I've always said I'm going blonde when the grey comes through.

I like L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss. If you don't want red tones the key is to look at the little squares on the top that tell you the ratio of different colours in it and make sure there's no mahogany (they call it "mahagony" Grin). Medium Brown would give the colour you are after and you can do at home. Otherwise I think as you're so young you could go fabulous silvery blonde and wash with purple shampoo to make it a.really fresh silver. My friend has done this and looks amazing!!

Maybe try a darker base with a half head of highlights - it's like going blonde but without the commitment (if the blonde gets too much just switch your parting or wear your hair up). The highlights help blur the regrowth a bit too.
My hair tends to go very dark even when the hairdresser uses lighter brown dyes.
Weirdly semi-permanent dyes tend to be darker than you think they'll be/than the colour on the box and permanent dyes lighter

Have you thought about Henna? The Lush one is lovely and it comes in a rich brown - also makes the condition of your hair REALLY silky.
