Kids birthday party present. How much do you spend?

Hello wise mummies, just wondering how much do you usually spend on kids birthday presents? Like closer friends. My child is on in nursery and will start reception. So we are just starting attending birthday parties. So far only attended his very close friends birthday party ( I m quite close with the mom) and I gave £20 on gift card and bought a big book and also game worth £6.00. But, I got no idea how much would you spend for someone who you hardly know. Sorry I m just wondering as I don't want to upset anybody or be rude attending party and not showing respect.
Thanks for reading.

I usually spend about a tenner I'd say.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 04/02/2022 21:58

I think up to £10 for random child (I usually buy things when on offer 2 for £15 or similar and save one for inevitable next party.)
Up to £15 for a close friend.
Up to £20 for a very best friend.

Up to £10. A bit more for a close friend.

I tend to spend a tenner on just a friend. Then possibly £20 on a close friend

SarahWoodruff · 04/02/2022 22:02

£10 max. Typically I'd get a book (Draw with Rob or those sticker dollies ones are my go-tos) which I think is ample for a small child's present. I don't usually get extra sweets etc since I don't always know how the parent would feel about it!

Pegasussnail · 04/02/2022 22:03

15 to 20 euro so probably a tenner if I was in the UK and I'd add a little book or something

icelollycraving · 04/02/2022 22:07

£10 for a party gift, up to £20 for closer friend. I did go a bit too generous at first, but in reception there was a party so often, I soon cut back.

purplesequins · 04/02/2022 22:10

at that age (and whole class parties) about a tenner.
very good friends a little more.
now my dc are teens it's a 20€ gaming gift card & a box of chocolates.

Isittooearlyforbed · 04/02/2022 22:12

About £10, upto £20 for closer friend

drpet49 · 04/02/2022 22:12

£5-£10 max

RussianSpy101 · 04/02/2022 22:14

£10 for a classmate. £20 for a close friend / my friends children.

Ladywoodster · 04/02/2022 22:16

Up to £20 on a best friend.
£10-15 on one of their friendship circle
£7-£10 on a random kid from the class

But I wouldn't go out of my way to spend that exact amount; if I saw the perfect gift cheaper then that would be it (no extras to make it up cash-wise).

Anonyrodent · 04/02/2022 22:18

About £10 but with all class parties starting again and attending one with 30 odd children last weekend, seeing the present table groaning under about £300 of stuff made me feel sad. No child needs that, yet it becomes perpetuating. My DS is desperate for a big party, he has never had one, but I can’t stand the thought of all that stuff he’ll barely look at.

It’s all too much.

mummabubs · 04/02/2022 22:18

Ditto what others have said, around £10 (or a little less) for most kids but maybe a bit more for close friends. I'm on maternity leave and my 4 year old has been invited to a cluster of parties so I can't really afford to be spending more than this. Even after I'm back to work I doubt I'd spend any differently to be fair. I think if parents go a bit OTT it can feel awkward then as I feel a pressure to match it.

Absolutely agree. They are exactly the figures i would use.
pastaparadise · 04/02/2022 22:18

8-10 on random class party (there are a lot in reception!)
10-15 on good friend

Saracen · 04/02/2022 22:39

£5 for little kids, £7-10 for big kids. BUT if it was a kid I knew very well and I found the "perfect" gift for them then it could be as little as £1 or as much as £20. I don't think they are conscious of how much was spent on them, only of whether they like it!

We don't have huge parties though. My kids have mostly just gone to parties for their close friends, meaning the total outlay is not high.

Adhelinaa · 04/02/2022 22:40

Thank you so much everyone. And idea about gifts 2 for £10 and 2 for £15 sounds like a great idea.

I've been buying a jigsaw and a small set of books, totalling £10 for gifts for DS's nursery parties.
