How much allowance do you give your adult dc who are still in 6th form?

We’ve asked Dd to stop working in her job because she was doing far to many shifts. Dd wanted to stay and do the minimum 4 hours - but the pressure to just do Thursday etc would have resulted in us fighting with her for the remainder of the school year as she would have got dragged into extra hours and neglect her schoolwork.
How much money would you give your 18 yr old weekly for a few months until A levels are finished?

It depends what you can afford. I’d help them sustain some of what they were spending while earning. It’s great they’re a hard worker but I agree while they’re in school that it needs to be a priority to complete education and 30hrs a week for a student of 18 plus full time education is a disaster.

Ds gets £12 per week plus bus fairest and lunches and we provide everything for him as he has no interest in clothes etc.

At that age Dd got £35 per week which had to include books & clothes

My son's 6th form recommended no more than 8 hours if they're working part time but D's isn't working yet. He's in the second year plus has another studying commitment which he's nearly completed.
We pay for everything he needs which isn't much really, (lunches from home, not really outgoing, he is a tech geek so is always on a computer or reading) he pays for his driving lessons from his trust fund money

DS (15, year 11) gets £40 a month plus £10 phone. I will pay for the bus to college. I don't know what he will need in a year or two but if he had a job I wouldn't be able to replace that kind of money. He won't be an adult in sixth form for long, just the exam period.

Thank you everyone for all the answers.

Dd has a very good work ethic, which her father and I both respect.
The reason we’re asking your advice is because dh wants to give her close to what she’s giving up at work (we can afford it) - I struggle with this…. I think it’s to much for not working.

I feel Dd should be motivated to get good enough A levels with sacrifice.
I don’t think giving her as much as she’s giving up is teaching anything.

My son gets half his disability and the other half is put into savings for him. I still buy his clothes, pay for his phone etc. He's actually quite
good with his money. Think his biggest spending is on books, d and d, his art supplies and the occasional computer game.

It’s a shame she couldn’t just reduce her hours to say 12 hours a week but in answer to your question I would say £100 to include for travel and lunch.

It’s not supposed to be a ‘lesson’ though, is it? You’re just supporting her so she doesn’t have to work through her a-levels. Not everything has to be a life lesson.

They get £100 a month, phone paid, Spotify paid, driving lessons. All food at home etc.

CurlyMango · 04/02/2022 20:37

Oh and they get paid bus tickets pass

Whatwouldnanado · 04/02/2022 21:04

Ours enjoys 6th form, great grades, gets £20 pw and we pay for her phone, bus ticket and driving lessons (part Christmas presents). She does four hours mid week and six hours at the weekend, more at busy times. She knows not to take on too much as school comes first. She's saving to travel.
