Any part time teachers around?

Considering dropping a day or two.

I am currently UPS3 but no other allowances. I’m wondering what my take home would be on 0.6 or 0.8.

Would anybody mind sharing?

how many hrs/sessions do you want to do. You divide that to get your %.

bindud · 04/02/2022 09:40

Also where are you UPS3 in inner london is just over 50k but less elsewhere

Pinkbluegrey · 04/02/2022 09:40

I don’t teach Maths Grin No, I’d be looking to drop either one day (0.8) or two (0.6).

I’m not in London - I know what the pay is full time but I’m just wondering what this would translate to in monthly terms if I dropped a day or two days.

take your salary times by 0.6 or 0.8

bindud · 04/02/2022 09:43

put the annual income into an online salary calculator & adjust for your pension that will be your take home.

wonderstuff · 04/02/2022 09:45

I’m UPS 2 with lower SEN allowance on 0.6, take home pay is £1621 pcm. I’ve done 0.8 and ended up doing a lot from home, was a SENCO at the time though so lots of admin, I’m finding at 0.6 there’s less expectation of doing a ft job on pt hours.

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 04/02/2022 09:45

I was on ups2 I took home about 1000 on 2 days.

wonderstuff · 04/02/2022 09:47

Also look at pension, I’ve been part time for about 15 years and my pension has really taken a hammering, although I don’t think I’d still be teaching if I had stayed ft.

Pinkbluegrey · 04/02/2022 09:55

I know - the pension is a consideration but I am on my knees here! Grin

It’s not much when it translates to PT pay, though Sad

I’m 0.6/UPS3 and on about £1600 a month.

Pinkbluegrey · 04/02/2022 10:08

Thanks, @Howshouldibehave

I wonder if 0.8 - or just dropping a day might be the best option. It’s hard because we have a young child and want to conceive again in the next three months. So if I drop to PT that would affect my maternity pay.

However, I also don’t want to run the risk of working FT in case it took a long time to TTC or it didn’t happen at all.

It’s really tough, I don’t think teaching and young children works terribly well, I dropped to 3 days when dd was born and haven’t gone done ft in 14 years now. I also started specialising in SEN, I’m mainstream based but my largest group is 4, I do a fair amount of psychometric testing and I complete all the GCSE exam access applications. This means that I don’t have piles of marking or long parents evenings.

Now my kids are in secondary school hours are beneficial and although I’m pt I’m also doing a pt masters degree, so in effect dong a ft week which is now manageable.

I’d say that SEN teaching (but not SENCO) allows you to use your skills and experience without an unmanageable workload.

Cookiecrisps · 04/02/2022 15:00

If you work in primary it’s worth bearing in mind that on 0.8 you will probably have full responsibility for planning & assessment for the class as the 0.2 may be taught by TAs. This would influence my decision as to whether it is worth dropping to 0.8 as in that scenario you would only drop a day’s teaching but would have to plan and resource it which can take just as long.

Pinkbluegrey · 04/02/2022 15:01

I’m secondary but thanks - i have heard primary colleagues say similar.

UPS 3 on just under £1600 a month. Best thing I ever did going part time.

Pinkbluegrey · 04/02/2022 15:06

Are you 0.6, @Lamby1234?

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 04/02/2022 15:38

Bear in mind, that to fit the timetable, you may get caught in trapped time, so your 0.6 or 0.8 could be spread over four or five days, leaving you with several periods during the day as part of your non working time, but trapped in school if you have one lesson period 1 and another, period 4, for example.

hollyivysaurus · 04/02/2022 15:41

I’m 0.6 on UPS2 and take home is around £1450 after deductions

Pinkbluegrey · 04/02/2022 15:50

I wouldn’t accept that @Foxyloxy1plus1, but to be fair I don’t know any part time teachers at our school who have that - it’s full days unless otherwise requested.

But that will very much be governed by the subject you teach, how many exam classes and how many lessons a week those classes get. PE, music, history doable. Maths, English, Sciences probably not.
Sherrystrull · 04/02/2022 15:55

@Howshouldibehave

I’m 0.6/UPS3 and on about £1600 a month.
Same as me.
LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 04/02/2022 15:57

Also, do they have staff already employed who could pick up your dropped hours, are there enough staff for your tutor group etc. Just because the school have managed previous requests doesn’t mean they can automatically facilitate yours

Pinkbluegrey · 04/02/2022 15:59

It isn’t unheard of for teachers to go part time with young children - not sure why I’m having to justify this! I’m just asking about pay!
