Electric plate hobs

I think that’s what they’re called anyway, the cookers with older style electric hobs with the circle disc things on top.
Are they difficult to cook with/clean? Or are they fine?
My cookers broken and these seem to be the cheapest replacement, I’m pretty skint so tempted to go for the cheapest option, but can wait a bit longer to get a different type if they’re really no good

If you mean the solid plate ones then they're a nightmare to cook with. They take forever to heat up and cool down so things are forever boiling over. We had them when we moved in here 30 years ago and couldn't wait to get rid of them. We changed them for a ceramic/halogen hob.

Ah that’s what I was worried about, I’m awful at cooking as it is so probably not the best idea then!

We've got them as our landlord put in the cheapest possible everything. Its not great to cook on especially as I'm used to working in professional kitchens with gas. The heat isn't instant and you have to guess when you want it turning down to a simmer. Your cookware has to be totally flat in contact with the plate for an even heat too so no use with woks. Not very efficient with heat as it stays hot for ages, but we just put an old kettle on top to warm through on the residual heat ready for the washing up. The one good thing about them is they are really easy to clean once they've cooled down.

We have this type and we're happy with it. I'd get them again if I ever needed to.

I don’t cook much on the hob tbf only really for pasta and veg (my cooking ability is… not great)

They are a complete nightmare to clean. I’d try and get a halogen top if possible. Second hand, whatever, just not one of those…

We have no problem cleaning ours. We just use a slightly abrasive cleaner and a scrubbie sponge.

BlissfullyIgnorant · 03/02/2022 21:31

They're monstrous things that should be illegal.
If you can change it, do so, soon

MrsPear · 03/02/2022 21:43

Nightmare to clean and can be bloody dangerous with kids around - once hot they stay hot for ages.

RampantIvy · 03/02/2022 21:48

They are awful. Slow to heat and slow to cool down. I cook on gas, but had to use the old fashioned electric hob at MIL's house when we visited. I ended up having two hobs on - one to bring something to the boil and one on low so that I could simmer.

If you have to have electricity there are much better hobs available.

Also, can I suggest that you treat yourself to a recipe book with some simple, tasty and easy to cook recipes.

I do have the option of gas as there a gas connection there but I have no clue about gas ovens I’ve never used one- are they better? I’d worry about my ds turning the knobs and gassing us!

You can have a gas hob and an electric oven. I think this is the most popular option these days. I currently have an all gas cooker, but am getting a new kitchen and having a gas hob and an electric oven.

Has anyone seen this before, installed a brand new hob today and the customer says they turned it on for first use and this happend without any pan on it, it also tripped the electric shortly after the picture.
