Orthodontics and moving abroad / gap years

Ds is undergoing orthodontics , he’s a bit older than most , in his early twenties, but lives at home. He has been offered an opportunity to move to Canada for 6 months which he is super keen to take up. He really deserves this, he had some real set backs growing up with SEN and has done so well, has good job but has watched his siblings having opportunities and him being stuck at home, and this would be so good for him. He has worked in a stressful key worker role albeit from home for the last two years , he needs to get out and start living his life and for his mental health and social development dh and I really support this move.

Orthodontist has just said they will try to get things done by then but can’t be sure, very unlikely to be finished etc and would advise not moving .

Has anyone transferred mid treatment , is it possible to pause treatment, what should we say to ortho, treatment is private and we would be prepared to throw money at the issue either for check ups in Canada or to fly home a couple of times for appointments .

You would have to find an orthodontist out there if definitely moving. Not possible to just pause for 6 months. They would then let you know if they could take him on and finish the treatment. Depends on what system the brace appliance is and if they work with it. Also at what stage he is at. So best to have a consultation once there and see what they can do. Or if you already know the area you could email ones local to there and ask whether they accept transfer cases. If they'd be willing to, then they'd request his records and continue the treatment. Would definitely cost you to do this though. Some would charge as a new treatment, others would only charge you for each visit so again it depends.

The other option is for him to fly back for his visits but this may be really expensive? Visits can be anything between 6-12 weeks though, again depending on his treatment stage and orthodontist availability.
