Can I have someone stay over for a month if I'm claiming benefits?

Please can anyone tell me this. If I am claiming housing costs through universal credit, can I have a friend to stay for one month?
It's not actually me but I need to be able to tell the person and can't find the info online

Of course you can
There's no rule saying you can't have someone to visit!

Yes

I'm not sure council tax benefit will allow that, they used to have restrictions on single persons allowance. But it was 20 years ago when I claimed that so it could have changed. Might be worth looking into that one.

If it's genuinely only going to be a month I wouldn't even tell UC.

Georgeskitchen · 03/02/2022 17:21

Don't tell them

RedCandyApple · 03/02/2022 17:28

Exactly how would they know? Most people do this all the time no one tells anyone it’s not like it’s permanent

You're allowed to have guests.

But because this is the benefits office and are a law into themselves I'd say make sure the person staying can easily show they have their own home and are paying bills for that home in the unlikely event it's queried.

If it's just a month I think the only way it would be questioned is if someone reported your friend for benefit fraud.

Not if they're a romantic partner. Or could be seen as one.
