Where to stay in Wales?

SandandFog · 02/02/2022 23:14

I live in the north of Scotland and have never been to Wales Blush so I'd like to take my family in the Easter holidays (primary school age kids).

I have no idea where to go, can anyone help?

Ideally would like a cottage/holiday rental near a beach but open to hotels or caravans as well.

Anyone have any suggestions of where to stay? Thanks!

Tenby is great for kids

We've also done the staying at Bluestone option and then it's a 15 drive to Tenby. We loved Bluestone even during covid times!

Pembrokeshire all day long. And plenty of accommodation options. We live in Pembrokeshire so I’m biased, but our economy depends so heavy on tourism so we’re really glad to have visitors.

The Llanrwst valley is beautiful and less touristy than a lot of North Wales.

Please don’t book a bloody holiday cottage. Just please don’t. We are losing all our welsh communities, and have rapidly rising levels of homelessness, because of bloody holiday homes. There are six holiday homes within shouting distance of my house, all of them used to house families. I know people who have been evicted because their landlord can get more money on Airbnb. There are alternatives. Camping, a barn on a farm, etc . There is a big rally on this coming up and there have been several in the past six months. If you like the idea of visiting Wales then please do think of doing it in a way that doesn’t destroy our villages and communities.
This! Bloody holiday homes mean that young people can’t afford, or have access to homes in their community.

Pembrokeshire is beautiful.

Have a look at Trallwm Forest Cottages, I couldn't recommend them enough. The cottages are mostly converted barns in the forest. It's the Elan Valley area, and as a previous poster said, less touristy than some of the other parts of Wales. Despite that it's absolutely stunning, and lots to do. We had a wonderful week visiting the red kite centre, walking around waterfalls, driving up the Devil's Staircase to the beautiful coast, and watching the wildlife from our hot tub. There are 4 or 5 very different walks from the doorstep, with breathtaking views. It was also very reasonably priced when we stayed (pre-pandemic, not sure what their prices are like now).

We've also stayed in this National Trust cottage, the pics say it all:

There really are some stunning places in Wales!

What do you want out of the holiday? If you want wals, beaches, scenery etc then Anglesey and Pembrokeshire are the best.

If you want arcades, food, entertainment, fairs (traditional British seaside caravan holiday) then Rhyl, towyn, Prestatyn North Wales are ideal. People scoff at these places but they really are great for younger kids.
We have a family static caravan in Abergele and we go as often as we can. My children have had the best times there and made so many memories, and because ours is on a residential site they/we have friends there too.

I had mentioned barns on farms as a way to stay here without damaging us.

Gower/Mumbles - absolutely beautiful area, lots to do, amazing beaches, close to the leisure centre in Swansea, and within an hour of Cardiff, which has Techniquest, St Fagan's and loads of other things to do. (And if you do come down this way, you must have a Joe's ice-cream. Trust me).

South West. Saundersfoot, Tenby area. Also, Barafundle Bay. I know Scotland has amazing beaches...but wait until you see this!
