World Book Day

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 01/02/2022 19:29

It's World Book Day next month so I just wanted to start a thread so people could share ideas - the cheaper the better - for anybody who may be struggling, especially with the cost etc.

I hope this helps :)

Arrrrgh no, not world book Day. My kids always want to be something really complicated 😂

KindergartenKop · 01/02/2022 20:46

My son has been Harry Potter before. He wears his school uniform, his dad's old school toe and his own owlish glasses. This only really works if you like Daniel Radcliffe though, which DS does.

DD is always Malfoy. For the same reason. Grin

DD has been reading old copies of my husbands garbage pail kids comics and has decided she wants to go as one of them which should be interesting 🥴

mnahmnah · 01/02/2022 21:12

The problem for us, is that DC school always has a theme. One year was Shakespeare!! Until they tell us the theme, we can’t plan!

KindergartenKop · 01/02/2022 21:18

One year they told them all to come in PJs (theme of bedtime stories). That was great but I think the kids complained!

I asked DS and he's thinking about being Artemis Fowl or David Attenborough Grin

And let me guess, they tell you the night before? Grin

My dc's have to bring a story in a jar, which I groaned at, but my ds said his idea is to plant a tree sapling in a jar of soil and write some quotes from 13 storey treehouse.
My dd will no doubt come up with something way more complicated.

They also have to wear something of a particular colour for a book about crayons.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 01/02/2022 21:33

@PutYourBackIntoit A story in a jar?! That's different!

Is it 'The Day the Crayons Quit?' Smile

@KindergartenKop PJ theme is so much easier! And much more affordable for parents too.

David Attenborough sounds like an easy option? Grin

OP posts:
KindergartenKop · 01/02/2022 22:00

David Attenborough sounds easy (DS is a walking animal encyclopedia) but I think he actually would prefer something more glamorous.

Leeds2 · 01/02/2022 22:20

Pippi Longstocking is very easy!

Or Double Act, by Jacqueline Wilson, if you can get your daughter and a friend to go dressed identically.

PhantomErik · 01/02/2022 22:27

For any kids who like Percy Jackson books you can buy 'Camp Half Blood' t-shirts from ebay/Amazon etc for around £8-10. My DS loved this 'outfit' & regularly wore the t-shirt at home as well as for WBD.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 01/02/2022 22:35

Winnie The Pooh: Yellow Onesie (or yellow leggings and long sleeved top) with a short sleeved red top and bear ears.

Tiger Onesie: The Tiger Who Came to Tea

BFG: Beige Top, Green/Brown Jeans or Shorts. His ears could be made of card and then stuck onto a headband.

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory: The Golden Ticket could be made on two separate pieces of cardboard. Apply some ribbon or something similar and that could be worn over top and leggings/jeans.

Cat in the Hat: Black Long Sleeved Top. White material/felt (Hobbycraft/Local Haberdashery Store?) cut into a circle and stuck on the stomach area of the top. Black jeans/leggings. The hat can be made from cardboard and decorated with paint/red and white paper etc.

Hope these help Smile

@PhantomErik

Thanks for that! Just ordered one for DS for his kerb day - he’s obsessed!

CatDogMonkeyPOW · 02/02/2022 07:58

My upper primary DS is going as Arthur Dent. Pyjamas, dressing gown, and towel. The book has a couple of swear words in it though so I guess it depends how you feel about that.

Mudday · 02/02/2022 08:15

Huckleberry Finn is a character who demands the poverty look, so it's a win win for impoverished parents. Sit on a straw hat, but make sure it's slightly wearable despite being flattened, then add worn out trousers, preferably with rat chewed edges. Barefoot is unfortunately a must. The final touch is a sunkissed smile and the ability to whistle.

Vanillaradio · 02/02/2022 09:30

Ds wants to be Lil Petey/Catkid from Dogman! We are going with brown/orange t-shirt and trousers and black superhero cape then will buy cat ears on a headband! He's a bit disappointed we aren't arranging retractable claws but I've told him that will get in the way of his school workGrin. This is on a theme as we've already done Dogman (blue trousers, top and baseball cap, yellow felt symbol stuck on hat and top and then dog ears headband)
We've also done David Attenborough before- light blue shirt, beige trousers. And George from George's Marvellous Medicine- red T-shirt, jeans, jar labelled medicine!

SartresSoul · 02/02/2022 09:44

DD was Verruca Salt one year. She already had white tights, her black school shoes and a beige fur coat so just bought a cheap frilly pink dress and pink rabbit crossover bag on eBay plus a golden ticket. Think the costume cost me £10 in total and she wore the clothes afterwards so wasn’t like a specific costume she’d never wear again. I usually get things on eBay anyway, seems pointless buying a costume they’ll only wear once.

drspouse · 02/02/2022 09:55

Hopefully my DD will want to be the Tiger who Came to Tea again. Third time!
