giving someone a compliment and it going to their head

Anyone else get this - when they give someone a compliment, that person gets all big headed about it and starts acting all mightier than thou or acting as if they've been crowned king or queen / are the cream of the crop etc. I usually give a compliment while thanking or to be polite or make them feel good about themselves. But it sucks when they start bloody getting up on their pedestal as if it's given them a huge ego boost to the point they can basically lecture and patronise.

And I guess this will sound a bit sexist but from my experience it seems to be a man thing more than a woman thing!? (I am prepared to be told I am wrong here).

Anyone else know anyone like that?

Isn't it just a low self esteem thing

Cheekypeach · 01/02/2022 18:42

I think it’s a bit self important to believe an offhand comment from you can change a person’s entire personality Confused

MichelleScarn · 01/02/2022 18:42

What type of compliments are you giving to get that reaction?!

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/02/2022 18:43

What on Earth did you say to them?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/02/2022 18:44

Doesn't ring any bells tbh.

fffffoafmofsamfo · 01/02/2022 18:46

@Cheekypeach where did I say that I changed their personality? I meant that in the immediate aftermath of said comment, their behaviour changed and became pompous.

Comments such as 'thanks - you know your stuff about xxx computer programme, you're really good at it"

And what did they then say?

Howshouldibehave · 01/02/2022 18:48

I can honestly say this has never happened to me!

Maybe just say, ‘thanks for your help, I really appreciate it’ next time, rather than anything too OTT?

fffffoafmofsamfo · 01/02/2022 18:49

i think it's just maybe the people i know!! I have my suspicions they are covert narcissists lol

I’ve had this when I’ve complimented people’s kids and they’ve gone all smug about it.

That doesn't sound pompous, it sounds like they are praising your knowledge. Am I missing something? Or were you the one who said that to them in thanks?

Ohyesiam · 01/02/2022 18:53

Doesn’t sound familiar to me.

fffffoafmofsamfo · 01/02/2022 18:53

@ApolloandDaphne that was the initial compliment i said to them. Not that they said to me.

Hamelldaeme · 01/02/2022 18:57

I've only ever experienced this with children.

purplecorkheart · 01/02/2022 19:00

I find the entire opposite. I find if you compliment someone they shrug it off as if they are undeserving and or it was just a stroke of luck rather than their skills/talents/kindness etc.
